Steal-Free Flip Mini Camcorder! (Angieslist.com)

Hello All-

This wouldn't be a consumer advice blog if I didn't mention to you an up and coming website that you might want to consider joining!

The site is www.angieslist.com and it is the sister site to craigslist.org

This site is consumer driven and you can find reports on all types of businesses, contractors and service providers in your local area. This site is growing across the U.S. and Eugene, OR happens to be one of the first sites it set up shop in.

This is super short notice, but if you join and submit 15 company report (3 have to be medical providers..doctors, dentists, etc.) you can earn a FREE Flip Mini Camcorder! The deadline is midnight Oct. 31, so don't delay!

They have several membership levels/prices, but if you are working on a home project I highly encourage you to join...they have great reports from other consumers on there!

Hint: the report recording will take you approx. 1 to 1.5 hours depending on how much you write and how fast you type. It took me just over an hour to submit and earn my free Flip (which I am excited about because this was on my Christmas list!).

Smokin' Deal- www.artscow.com (personalized gifts!)

Hello All-

I visit www.spoofee.com daily to check on any great deals. Make this a habit too!

Today one of the deals is for www.artscow.com, they specialize in personalized gifts.

They were offering 99 cent personalized photo dog tags with the code: 99DOGTAG, this code gets you 1 for 99 cents shipped!!! A great stocking stuffer idea for a person in your life...this would be a very hip gift for the tween crowd, but really many people would like this!

However, when I got online I see that if you sign up for an account with this company...they give you all types of FREE items credits. You can score some great deals by visiting this site and it seemed really user-friendly.

I got 2 dog tags for my brother and his girlfriend with a picture of them on them, regular price $17.98 + shipping for $1.98 shipped!! I used my code "99DOGTAG" and they gave me a free dog tag credit on this order, the coupon code allows you to get free shipping! A smokin' deal!

Check it out!

Deal-Disney Tinkerbell Movie - $4 Boboli Rebate

Hello All-

I am learning lots about rebates and I want to share my new knowledge with you!

I bought the latest Disney release Tinkerbell yesterday. I knew that when I bought a Disney video to enter my movie code on Disneyrewards.com (it's free to join and you get free Disney stuff, enter points for DVDS purchased or send in your movie ticket stubs!). I also knew that since I had purchased Ariel and Sleeping Beauty, this purchase unlocked my free offer of a tinkerbell collectors box (got that ordered for my daughter for Christmas...free! from disney rewards) and I knew that I would get the $5 rebate for the Minute Maid juice (sent that off yesterday, see previous blog for this entry), but what I didn't know was that there was another rebate offer! I got the thought to google Tinkerbell DVD rebates and I got a hit! Boboli is offering a $4 rebate with DVD purchase, the form is on www.boboli.com...it's like getting those products for free if you buy them at Winco or use your coupons at pricier stores.

My suggestion is that Disney often pairs with other retailers for rebates, if you buy a Disney movie or another kid title that got a lot of press, it would be worth your time to google video name and rebates and see what you get for hits! It might be worth it to score some free food!

I am noticing that more rebates are allowing you to send in copies of your receipt and all Disney DVDs have at least 2 proof of purchase tabs allowing you to take advantage of multiple rebate offers!

Happening-Victoria's Secret Collegiate Collection

Hello All-

Victoria's Secret has introduced a new collegiate line as part of their "pink collection". If you have fond memories of your college days or just want to support your favorite team, they do have a very good collection of 20+ colleges that have fun yoga pants, sweat pants, baseball tees, hoodies, etc.

These would probably fit into the lounge category, but could be worn out too!

Victoria's Secret at Valley River Center-Eugene is carrying the U of O line, but for other colleges visit www.victoriassecret.com

Hint: if you want to buy something, consider doing it on-line as they always offer great coupons and if you can find codes, you can enter up to 3 at a time so you can get some great deals this way! Visit www.retailmenot.com for promo codes, they are always available.

My story: I bought the U of O bling hoodie. I used a coupon code for $10 off a $50+ purchase, used my $10 birthday Angels reward and got a free messenger bag with a $50+ purchase using the 3 promo codes it allowed me to enter. Usually I go for the free shipping offers, but they don't have any that are currently working, but with this vendor it is very important to coupon stack!! They have great offers when you combine coupons!

Deal-Fandango/Trial Pay (Free Movie Tickets!)

Hello All-

If you go to the movies or want to, but think it is too expensive (I do!), then check out this promotion!

Visit www.fandango.com and view movie times...you will see next to the movie times a tab that says "free movie ticket", click on it. It will redirect you to a site called TrialPay. If you complete one of the transactions will listed vendors, 90+, Fandango will send you a coupon/promo code for a free movie ticket!

If you are planning on buying items on-line, then see what vendors are included as this is an easy to way to earn free tickets for items you already planned to buy! (Vendors include PacSun, Limited Too, Shoebuy.com, etc.)

My Story: I needed to buy my daughter some Crocs boots so I saw that Shoebuy was one of the TrialPay vendors. They are offering a 10% discount, plus free shipping with any purchase. I bought the shoes through the Trial Pay link and already have my free movie ticket code! Once the order is processed, Fandango forwards on the promo code email. Steal-Hanna Andersson Dress Sale!

Hello All-

When I love a brand I try to tell everyone about it! One of my faves is Hanna Andersson. The quality is impeccable, the durability is wonderful and they have great resale potential...all the things I look for in childrens clothing.

They don't often have sales that have really good stock and I haven't seen this sale before, so take advantage of it! All the baby/toddler/girl dresses in the latest catalog are $19, 29, 39 and this is a great savings over the typical price! I will suggest the "It's a Playdress, It's a Daydress", this is one of the best dresses I have owned, it is super easy to take care of and my daughter loves hers!

Hint: go with a few friends to stock up on sale items and save on shipping!

Also, those of you who don't know, Hanna Andersson has an outlet store in Lake Oswego, OR. I try to hit it a few times a year as things are hit and miss at this store, but sometimes some excellent bargains can be had!

Deal-Garnet Hill Sale + Clearance + 20% Bonus Discount!

Hello All-

Garnet Hill is a higher end e-tailer that carries lots of fun items from their own lines as well as other lines you would recognize like Patagonia, Franco Sarto, etc.

They have home furnishings and clothing for the whole family. When they have sales, I like to check out what they have because the quality is high often times at a price that doesn't reflect the pricey-ness of the lines they carry.

Right now anything in their sale and clearance section, markdowns up to 50% off are an additional 20% off, but you must click through the sale email for this offer to show up.

This program features several perks including special shopping nights and exclusive discounts. Retailers I believe are moving to these types of programs to track purchases and get away from "coupon sharing" from websites, so you may have to switch to these types of programs to get the great coupons they offer.

If you are hesitant to give out your information, I encourage you to sign up for a free email account and have all your retail information go there.

Toys R Us is a reputable company and I would trust their program to bring you all the benefits and protect your privacy.

Steal-Rite Aid (Free Products!)

Hello All-

Get to Rite Aid and pick up the weekly circular! There are 10+ free products this month after rebate and many are only free for a few days this week, so take advantage of shopping during this period.

Similar to Walgreen's, they have an easy to fill out on-line rebate system with several payment options.

People...these are FREE!!! Go buy the items and put them in stockings this Christmas or consider donating these items to charitable organizations that help those in our community who need our help. Many of the items would be great to donate to SCAR/Jasper Mountain this year during their toy drives. People forget that many of the clients are teenagers who might not want toys, but who would love some foundation or mascara or body wash (all free this month). This is a perfect way to help those in our community by donating your time (to shop and fill out rebate), but not cost you anything out of your pocket.

Deal- Rebate P& G Products (Shopko)- $10 Gas Card

Hello All-

The retailers are struggling and they are going to offer all types of rebates! Take advantage of them!!

The catch is you HAVE to fill out the forms! I make a habit of filling out my forms and mailing them in within 1 day of bringing rebate oriented products home, that way I don't forget. Retailers love mail in rebates vs. instant rebates, because I can guarantee you at least 50% of the time these aren't redeemed, don't fall into this category.

If products are on a rebate that you use regularly, stock up when rebates are offered!

This week at Shopko, they are offering a $10 gas card with the purchase of $30 Proctor & Gamble products (this is a wide range, probably more than you think) of products you probably have sitting in your drawers/cupboards at home. This is a mail in rebate, so don't forget that step! The weekly circular says "see store for details", but I am sure it includes the major brands and other brands I forget are owned by them, such as IAMS cat food, Pampers/LUVS, etc.

FREE! - Soda Pop at Albertson's!

Hello All-

This week Oct. 22-28 at Albertson's if you buy 10-2 Liter Bottles of 7-Up, A&W and Sunkist you can get them for free!

Here's How:
-Buy 10 (2 Liter) products from brands listed above. They are on sale for $10/10.
-A coupon should print at register for you to mail in your receipt/rebate information and they send you a check for $10, essentially giving you your pop for free!
-YOU MUST BUY ALL 10 LITERS IN ONE TRANSACTION!

If you have a party you are planning (7-Up is great for drink mixers, etc.) then it is a great time to stock up!

Caution: I visited Albertson's Thurston this morning and the rebate didn't print out with my transaction. This happens all the time...be persistent! They are always good on making good on an offer, but it may take a few visits/phone calls, which is frustrating! I will update this blog with what I find out once they get this resolved. Sometimes taking advantage of this rebate on the first day of the sale can be troublesome, they usually get bugs worked out later in the sale.

Savings Tip-Retail "Free" Offers

Hello All-

There are lots of rebates out in stores that are truly great deals! However, there are others that actually will take so much time that you may just want to cruise over them.

Here is one example, you can decide if it is worth it and I will give you my verdict at the end:

This week in the Safeway circular they are offering Buy 2 American Express Gift Cards, get a $15 prepaid AMEX gift card after mail-in rebate.

I went to Safeway to check on this as AMEX gift cards have a "registration fee", which is a ridiculous way to have you pay more for their convenience of giving a gift. Most companies don't charge these fees, not sure why they do!

The fee is $3.95/gift card. Since you have to buy 2 to get the free one, you are looking at fees of $7.90. This would leave you theoretically getting $7 free from AMEX.

When I got to Safeway, I looked for the rebate mail in form. It was not with the gift cards and it wasn't at the customer service desk. Safeway is notorious for not knowing what is going on with their rebates and when they ran this promotion last year, they didn't know what to do either, so I issue a beware of offers they are running as I lost 30 minutes today in the store trying to have them locate the rebate form (they didn't and I had to come back to the store later...they had a form faxed, but the fine print clearly states you must have an original form...the faxed one wouldn't work). I was told they could probably have a form the next day for me. I had them call the Pioneer Parkway store and they have the forms so I went ahead and bought the 2 cards and will pick up the form later to send in.

Result: I have spent 40 minutes working to get the forms, I will spend another 10 filling out the paperwork and I will save $7. Was it worth it? See below for my opinion!

My verdict: This rebate was not worth it. My time alone is worth more than $7/hour when I have other things I could have been doing. If the rebate amount was more or I happened to be shopping at the store anyway and not making a special trip for this offer only, I might consider it a decent deal, but this time I wouldn't encourage it...not worth the time & effort.

Happening-New Kids Retail Option (www.77kids.com)!

Hello All-

I have a child with a very eclectic taste in clothing so I am always on the prowl for new clothing options that don't cost an arm and leg!

A new clothing e-tailer will be introduced soon from the parent company American Eagle..it is called 77kids.com and from what I have seen in a few magazines, offers fun classic-ly trendy pieces at cheaper prices than some of the other choices out there, plus I think you will be able to get your AE perks using this store (AE Access card, etc.) Also, their pieces are guaranteed for 77 washes...I am sure more on this policy will be posted once they are up and running, but I like this type of guarantee in a retailer.

This e-tailer isn't open yet for business, but will be soon. I signed up for their email list, so I will update the blog once they are up and running. Not sure if they will have stores as well, it would be nice, but we will have to wait and see!

Savings Tip- Buying With Friends & Reselling

Hello All-

On a previous post I talked about how some stores do Buy 1 Get 1 Free. This is great, but if you don't need 2 items, consider finding a friend who is looking for items in the same category as you. You could both save 50% by buying together!

Also, you might consider buying an item and getting 1 free and then reselling it on Craigslist or eBay if it is in high demand. I have done this in the past and I was able to pay for the item I bought with the sale of the other item.

Hint: this typically works better when the economy is hopping, but people get crazy at Christmas time and sometimes spend well over the retail value for an item.

STEAL- Fred Meyer Toy Dept. Deals

Hello All-

Retailers are gearing up for a poor holiday shopping season. Take advantage of some great deals and save some major bucks!

Right now at Fred Meyer (they seem to be leading the trend a bit) they are offering lots of Buy 1 Get 1 Free items in the toy dept. from huge brands (Mega Bloks, My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, Play-Doh, etc.). They are also offering many items 50% off already...these tend to be the types of sales you see post-Thanksgiving and may miss out on items or have to get up at 5 a.m. (no thank you!). Many fisher price, Barbie and Easy Bake products are discounted this week. Plus, Fisher Price is running a special promo, buy $80 worth of products and get a $20 gas card, so compare the savings and you might be able to save a bundle!

I know what my daughter wants for Christmas so I went in today and bought 1 My Little Pony Toy and 1 Littlest Pet Shop Toy (they let me combine different brands on the Buy 1 Get 1 Free...so check on this as it provides extra savings) and saved $25 on this combo and she wants an Easy Bake Oven, at 50% off I jumped on that and saved $15. I saved a total of $45 just by shopping early for items I knew I was going to buy anyway...that is a great savings!

Other retailers will start up with these trends here soon, so try to find out what your child wants if you don't already know and then watch for those items to go on sale as the shopping season and deals start happening.

STEAL- Rite Aid Free Products...Over $150!!

Hello All-

Rite Aid and Walgreen's are notorius for running outstanding freebie sales, take advantage of these! You can find all the free items in your Sunday Rite Aid circular or visit the store for the weekly ad.

They both have easy to fill out/enter rebate systems on-line that make it almost too easy to save $, so do it!

This week Rite Aid has over $150 worth of free products on their single check rebate system. They even make it easier by having all the items on an endcap near the cash register so you don't have to hunt them down (thanks to Matt at the Springfield store for telling me that!).

You buy the items, go home and fill out the on-line rebate system, they send you a check and you got the items for free! These are the types of freebies that are great for stocking stuffers..they have 3 great lip products that I will add to my stocking list. They have great kids meds and adult sinus/cold/flue options, even some homeopathic things this time around so check it out. I also encourage people to buy and donate these items to shelters, they are free to you so why not share with others that can't afford these items!

Summer's Savings Tip- #6- Sign Up for Loyalty Programs!

Hello All-

One of the best ways to earn coupons/freebies/discounts is to sign up for loyalty or frequent buyer plans at stores/restaurants that you frequent. They want to reward their customers and you can save big by taking part in these plans.

Note: Some people are concerned about opening up their account to spam, if this is an issue...consider signing up for a free email account through google, yahoo, etc.

Most stores have websites, look for e-clubs, newsletters or some type of notification tab that will allow you to get first notice of sales, discounts, COUPONS and other offers. This is the main way to communicate with you and it will be worth it. This is one of the best ways to get coupons sent directly to you, but you have to sign up! You can always cancel communication if you change your mind, but it doesn't hurt to check out the plans.

Also, many stores have punch cards...use these, they reward you for your business. Some stores are more forthright in asking for your punch card, but if they don't offer...ask! These are typically available at coffee houses, fast food restaurants (sub shops) and some smaller retail shops (spend a certain amount-get a discount).

The best perk that most businesses offer birthday perks. Sign up your whole family (living in your home) as they will all benefit from the perks! They are great, I know from experience!

It takes a bit of time to sign up for these perks, but it is worth your time as you only need to sign up once and let the savings roll in!

Hint: Many of these stores will send you printable coupons, print them out right when you get them and file them in your coupon file for organization in your coupon organizer. It is too easy to delete them from your email box if you don't deal with them upon getting them. Or create an email folder in your inbox that you place all emails in for sorting/printing at a later date. Either way, organization is key to this process as many of these offers expire soon after you receive them!

Summer's Savings Tip #5-Organize For Savings!

Hello All-

Tip #5 maybe should have been Tip #1 because it is so important, but nevertheless I will include it here.

To save you have to be organized and have a system in place that will help you find the coupons when you actually need them. Ideally it should be portable and divided into sections.

I recommend the couponizer organizing system. Visit www.couponizer.com to check out this organizing tool. You can easily make your own with a recipe or small shoe box, just make sure you can pack it easily!

When you clip coupons, set aside time to do this once a week or as needed. This is my process. I clip coupons throughout the week and place in a file folder labeled "coupons". 2-3x/week I file all my incoming coupons in my couponizer. This way I have current coupons always in my file. 2-3x/month I go through my couponizer and remove coupons that have expired. If you have someone in the military, they can use expired coupons in the commissary...consider mailing them!

Having a portable, organized system will help you save money! Don't try to do this without some type of system...it will drive you crazy and impede your success!

Here is information on Savings Tip #4. I prefer on-line shopping for the convenience and time saving it provides me. On-line shopping is an effective way to snag good deals and sales too!

I have several stores that I visit on a regular basis for sales/discounted items. If you have stores you like to shop, check online on a regular basis as items get discounted. Also, if you make a purchase check back because if an item is discounted typically within 7-14 days, you can request a price adjustment!

Before making an online purchase see if a promo code is available to use! Visit www.retailmenot.com, www.spoofee.com or type "name of store" promo code or coupon code in google.com and see if you get any hits. This is free money you can save, so make sure to check! Also, make sure you look in your coupon organizer for retail coupons or your Entertainment book for retail coupons.

Many stores will offer promotions of free shipping with a minimum purchase. Take advantage of this, either pool orders with friends or if it is a local store you can return items to, I have often bought what I needed to get the dollar amount and then returned to the store to save the shipping cost. Don't drive all over town and waste gas doing this, but if it is at a place you typically are near, it will save you $ without costing you gas.

Not as effective, but can work on-line, click on live help and ask the operator if they are running any promos/specials or if they will be soon. I have scored some discounts just for asking or I found out when an upcoming promo would be happening and waited to make my purchase.

If you have stores you shop at frequently, consider getting their credit card. This will give you special promotions, typically for on-line purchases and in store and can save you extra money. Gap, Kohl's, Macy's, etc. all have excellent reward programs with coupons!

Summer's Savings Tip #2- Coupon, Coupon, Coupons!

Hello All-

Here is savings tip #2!

Use coupons whenever and wherever you shop! Coupons are everywhere and you will save money by using them, they are free money back into your pocket...use them!

Even if you don't have a lot of time to devote to couponing, you can still save money. My theory is the more time you put in, the more you save, but still 1 hour a week can shave 10% off your food bill for example, a wise investment of time. If you have kids encourage them to help you clip/organize (more on this in tip #4).

Coupons abound in a variety of places, read my other blog entries for ideas and start clipping and saving!

Summer's Savings Tip #1

Hello All-

I have promised a few readers that I will list my own personal top 10 list of savings tips. Over the next few days I will post my ideas I have explored for saving money!

Tip #1- Don't Buy Items If You Won't Need Them!

A bargain isn't a true bargain if you won't actually use the item. The allure of a great deal shouldn't suck you in, it should allow you to save money if it is an item you need.

However, if you will use an item and it is on sale, consider purchasing it as many items go on sale when they are an immediate need and having a stash of items you will use that you were able to snag on a good deal is helpful to your savings plan. You will read more about this strategy theme in my other savings tip ideas!

Steal- $5 Curious George Hardcover Books + Plush (Kohl's)

Hello All-

Kohl's Dept. Store has a charitable program Kohl's Cares for Kids and they always sell books and plush animals to support this charity.

You can score a great deal and help a good cause! The current collection is Curious George. They have 4-5 big hardcover books that are an incredible valuable. They also have 4-5 plush animals (Curious George, Dalmation, etc.) that are featured in the stories.

Hint: Combine a book + plush for a fabulous Christmas present for a child on your list or consider purchasing some for the upcoming Toys for Tots toy drive or my favorite the SCAR/Jasper Mountain holiday collection drive. Either way, this is an inexpensive way to participate and help several noble causes.

Deal-REI Members Annual Sale!

Hello All-

REI is offering members the annual 20% off 1 full price item coupon from Oct. 3-13. This is a great time to pick up items that aren't usually included (North Face....I am wanting the new Hooded Denali Jacket...why didn't they think of this sooner?).

Also, great deals on regular line merchandise including a good deal on Dansko Mary Janes. $89 vs. the typical $109-120. Dansko's are hard to get on sale and for some reason REI sometimes gets a good deal on these so if you are in the market, check them out.

I have found with REI that if they don't have the merchadise in store, go online and select the FREE to store delivery and you can get what you want if they don't have it in the store that you shop at.

Steal- FREE CROCS! with Albertson's P&G Product Purchase

Hello All-

Thanks to SH of Eugene who was one of the people who inspired me to write this blog because of all of our savings conversations!

Right now at Albertson's if you make a single transaction purchase of $25 of a great variety of Proctor & Gamble products you can get a certificate for a free pair of Crocs!

How it works is you buy the products and then ask the cashier for the tear pad certificate (they had no idea what to do with this promo when I went into the store with the ad from the Wed. RG). However, they have some certificates at the register and/or the customer service counter. You will need this certificate and your original receipt. Mail them in and they will send you a voucher for a free pair of Crocs in specific sizes/colors.

I haven't gotten my certificate voucher yet, but I will update this once I know what the selection options are.

Remember, P&G had a coupon circular in the Sunday paper so take these coupons with you and buy products that you use that are on sale (quite a few are) to save some extra $!

Hint: many times the grocery stores run some type of product/rebate offer, and I am 3 for 3 in them not being able to figure out the offer the first night of the promotion. Be persistent, don't leave the store until they provide you with what you need to complete the process. I have walked out with better than they were offering because they weren't able to figure out what to do. I have had managers offer me some great deals because offers were printed out at the register or they couldn't figure out what paperwork was needed. I still got something free so I was happy, but usually start with the customer service desk as that is what they are for vs. holding up the register line (guilty!).

Hint 2: This might be a FREE gift idea for someone on your Christmas list! I am going to hopefully redeem my certificate for some Crocs for my mother-in-law who my daughter has converted to these great shoes!

Deal-Southwest Airlines!

Hello All-

If you are planning a trip with flights in the next few months check out Southwest Airlines! I scored a steal on some S. Cali flights this afternoon for just after Christmas. You do have to go out of Portland, but they had $129 each way (one way only fares available, you don't have to do round trip), so I purchased 2 individual one ways so I could fly out of 2 different airports during my stay.

These fares have restrictions (can't change, etc.), but they are a smokin' deal, I haven't seen SoCal fares this cheap in years!
