Savings Story- $1.42 (8 items!)

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to share my savings story on my recent trip to Walgreen's, I spent $1.42 out of pocket and netted 8 items and a $3 Register Rewards ($ off coupon for next visit!).

I got:
2 Glade Spray Air Freshners (Buy 1 Get 1 Free Coupon)
Business Envelopes- in store coupon
4 Peanut Butter Cups (Buy 1 Get 1 Free Coupon + In store promo free Coke Zero)
Colgate Toothbrush
1 8x10 photo collage (free with photo promo code)

To obtain these items on the cheap I used a combination of coupons, in store weekly ad coupons, previously earned register rewards ($7) to save lots of money! I also earned a $3 register reward to be used on my next purchase. This strategy is known as stacking, save coupons until you can combine them with in store promos for even more savings! It's fun!

Savings Tip- Science Factory Membership

Hello All-

I want to remind you of a great facility in Eugene, OR that offers a vast array of classes, open exploration time, planetarium, free/special events. The Science Factory in Eugene (near Autzen) has all kinds of cool science finds.

I highly encourage you spring for a membership, they start at $55 a year, but if you look at all the freebies with membership and you have at least 1 child you will save money so more kids equals even great savings!

The one easy way to make back your membership investment is to go to the weekly planetarium shows or if you have kids 5 and under the Tot Discovery Days that happen the 1st Friday of each month. If you go 1 time/month the membership pays for itself and you can use it at other science museums around Oregon/U.S.

Blog Changes-Announced

Hi Everyone!

I am making some changes to this blog so I wanted to update you with them. With the school year approaching and my priorities shifting, I won't have as much time to work with the blog as I have in the past and I am discovering some great savings blogs out there that are great for anyone wanting to save money and I will be sharing those with you.

This blog will change to a slightly more local feel as many of the other blogs cover the large chains, etc. You can get great information on those, but I will also post items of this content on my facebook page so please add me as a friend on facebook (Summer Olsen Highfill) as it is easier for me to put quick savings things I have seen on there vs. the blog and you can get more up-to-date items this way.

I will still be offering savings seminars (some free, some low cost) and will announce those here as well. I am also considering becoming a couponizer coach..more to follow on this!

Savings Story-Walgreens + Coupons

Hello All-

Just love to share savings stories and this one is like many, hold coupons and when a deal comes along at a retail store combine those coupons and buy items you use that are on sale that week, combining with manufacturer coupons whenever possible to rake in the savings!

This week I got $44 worth of products at Walgreen's for just $20! Over 50% savings!

Walgreen's this week was offering a $5 off $25 coupon, I always use these, as it is instant savings. The next few days in store they have a "meal deal", get coupon on Walgreens.com "weekly ad" tab, it was a Digiorno pizza, coke 12 pack and ice cream for $10! That got me halfway to my $25 tab I needed, so I pulled out my couponizer and gathered all the coupons that would work for items at Walgreen's pairing them with the coupons from the weekly ad for Walgreen's if possible for added savings. Remember, you can combine a store coupon with a manufacturers coupon for additional savings!

I got:
1-12" Digorno Pepperoni Pizza
8 pack Bonnie Belle lip gloss
12 Pack Coca Cola cans
Pert Plus Shampoo
Dreyers Ice Cream, 48 oz.
Visine Eye Drops
2-Bounty Paper Towel Rolls
2-Glade Air Freshner/Odor Eliminator

I used $6.28 in Walgreen's coupons, $4.87 in advertised sales from items I purchased and $11.24 in manufacturer's coupons for a great deal of savings! You can do this too, it is super easy and it doesn't take much time.

Deal-Macy's Handbags/Accessories (Gift Ideas!)

Hello All-

As you know, I am all about planning ahead and this requires a bit of prep work, but pays off big!

I have my list for birthdays and Christmas already created so I look for things that fit the recipients style.

Right now Macy's has several tables of handbags, small cosmetic type bags, scarves, etc. that are marked down 25%, an additional 40% off and if you use a Macy's savings pass available on their homepage or if you use your Macy's card savings is automatic for another 15% off! I got a couple of excellent deals on these tables and will tuck away for Christmas. My best find was a cosmetic bag that was close to $30 retail for $4.50!! I did use a $5 coupon for this, but that is a great deal! I can fill this with some fun treats that I will acquire the rest of the year and I have a great gift!

Posting Update-Find Me On Facebook Too!

Hello All-

I am sorry the posts have been a bit slow this summer. We have had a lot going on and my posting has slipped, so I am sorry. I hope to post 2-3 days a week this summer, but sometimes it is easier for me to pop up quick things I see daily on Facebook. I get a lot of emails and see lots of savings ideas daily and this is a quick way for me to post what I see. If you are on Facebook search for me "Summer Olsen Highfill" and add me as a friend...you will get fast posts about what I am seeing as well as larger savings stories and savings ideas on my blog.

Either way, keep saving!

Steal-Bath and Body Works Semi-Annual Sale

Hello All-

I love to stock up when prices are low, for my own consumption and gifts! One of the best chances to do this is the Bath and Body Works Semi-Annual sale. They always have great prices and incentives on items and don't forget your coupons!

Here is 1 of many savings examples. I like the Lay it on Thick shower cream. It retails for $15/bottle so I never buy it unless it is on sale. Right now you can buy 2 get 2 free on all True Blue Spa. So, for $30 I will get 4 bottles of shower cream and stock them. But, I have a survey coupon (received from a previous store purchase) that earns me $10 off $30, so I will actually get 4 bottles for $20! That is $5 bottle, a savings of 67%! That is great!

If you don't have a coupon in your coupon holder, do a google search for printable bath and body coupons. There are some for $10 off $40 out there as well as a few % off depending on what you are buying!

Steal-Prepaid Cell Phone Service

Hello All-

Tired of paying for high cell phone service? If you are like me (and I know many of you are not in this situation, but read on for some good savings). I don't text, I don't send pics from my phone and I save my iPod for my music. I have a land line because I don't get good cell service at my house. Yet, I pay almost $80 a month from the V cell phone service....this really got me when I looked at my statement and my husband used his phone for 3 minutes last month!

Needless to say, I am paying out TOO much money every month for this service. Introducing the prepaid cell option! I can keep my current phone #, I will need to purchase a "prepaid phone", but Verizon offers 5 prepaid options and I can prepay $100 worth of access/airtime that is good for 1 year from purchase. I can get a phone for $50. I will need to terminate my current contract at $100, but that alone is worth the savings I will instantly reap.

This is my breakdown:
Current Bill Average: $75 (12 Months- $900)
2 New Prepaid Phones $100
Termination Fee: $100
Access/Airtime Cards: $200 (1 year-2 phones)
Total for 1 Year of Prepaid Service:$400, a savings of $500 for the year and even more in additional years as the phone and termination fees won't be incurred.

This is what I call an incredible savings! Consider a prepaid plan if you don't need the latest hip phone and you don't use cell features.

FREE-Regal Cinemas Valley River Family Summer Movies

Hello All-

Regal Cinemas at Valley River Center offers free movies on Tues/Wed mornings at 10 a.m. The viewing schedule can be found at the link provided in this post.

I checked this out last year thinking it would be crazy, but I pleasantly surprised at how fun this was. There were moderate amounts of people, but not too many and since it is family themed (think young kids), I wasn't on edge if my daughter was talking through part of the movie, most of the kids are to some degree. If you are wanting silence, then stay home or hit another movie, but if you have kids and are looking for a FREE option this summer, check it out!

Some shows include: Space Chimps, Veggie Tales, Tale of Despereux, Evan Almighty.

One thing that is a tad confusing (and I will try to get clarification) is that I think both movies play on both days so you could hit both in a given week if you want. I thought one movie played 1 day and the other the second day, but I think they both play so you could see them both.

If you have the budget to splurge a bit, I recommend the kids pack for a treat that includes pop, popcorn and skittles. It is $4.50 and remember to use your Regal Cinemas card (free at customer service) at the concession stand as you will earn points!

Find-Schwans Strawberry/Blueberry Pack, Item #735

Hello All-

I don't always recommend slightly splurge items, but this falls more into the convenience option so I wanted to pass it along.

I do buy things from Schwan's on occasion. They have a great product which is whole blueberries and diced strawberries in a 4 single serving pack, item #735. It looks very similar to what McDonald's puts in their fruit and yogurt parfaits. You can throw these into smoothies, etc.

My daughter and I made fruit and yogurt parfaits today and they were DELICIOUS! We got the vanilla yogurt at Albertson's on the 10 for 49 cents each promo, plus $1 coupon! It actually ended up being cheaper than buying a parfait at McDonald's so some savings there too!

This would be a perfect pack to take on a day trip or camping trip, super easy!

Deal-Kids Eat Free, Marie Callender's Brunch

Hello All!

Those of you with kids will love this! You know how wonderful it is to get a meal off of cooking, but then you go to a restaurant and it seems to be actually more work! Once you finally get the kids food ready for consumption, yours is cold! Salad anyone?

So, great news! Marie Callender's who is offering kids eat free with adult meal and beverage purchase is including brunch in this promotion too! Adult Brunch is $14.99 and includes all types of breakfast foods, salad bar/soup bar and for those of us who are "breakfast food" fans, I might actually be a brunch convert at this one, they have lots of yummy lunch food too! Plus, dessert! Kids brunch, normally $7.99 is free when the adult buys brunch or anything off them menu! Today, I went with some friends for brunch, but ordered off the menu with a $9.29 entree and my daughter got her brunch free!

The best part was she could "snack" on a variety of foods while I got to enjoy my food warm too!

Here is a review of Luxe in Oakway Center, a stationery, paper, jewelry, everything boutique in Oakway Center. I had always avoided this store because the name alone made me thing ca-ching!! I couldn't have been more wrong, yes they have some pricey finds, but the selection and pricing is great for any budget or lifestyle and I highly recommend them if you are after a fun item for your home or gift.

The store is organized into easy sections to find what you are looking for an many items are under $20, so you can find anything for anybody! This is one of those great hidden gem stores that has things you don't see anywhere else around town all in one spot and the unique products are fantastic!

Savings Tip- Price Adjustments Retailers

Hello All-

Nothing is worse than buying an item and then seeing in on sale for MUCH cheaper than you purchased it for! I have had this happen and I am sure you have too!

I want to give you some tips to resolve/work through price adjustments!

1) Keep all your receipts! This is the #1 way to get a price adjustment.
2) If you have the merchandise you can take it to the store for the adjustment, but usually the receipt is sufficient.
3) Every store has different policies, but typically within 14 days of purchase (or less) you can get a price adjustment if an item has changed price. The store will credit you back in your original payment form. I have been known to request special treatment of a return/repurchase of an item if the savings was significant (one reason to make friends with sales associates from your favorite stores!) if I was past the adjustment period.
4) Watch store ads for special savings opportunities that might allow you an adjustment. Recently my husband bought some pillows for $11.99 and a pair of Ralph Lauren Khaki's ($29.99 on sale, down from $69.50) at Macy's. I knew that the 1 Day Sale (their monthly sale that is the best prices of that month) was 4 days after he made his purchase. I rounded up the receipts and made a trip in during the day of the sale and got the pillows down to $6.99 each (a $10 savings) and the pants had gone down to $13.99!! (a $16 savings!). I saved $26 in price adjustments, definitely worth the trip back into town! So...this brings me to the next hint! Especially for Macy's...if you know a 1 day sale is going to happen within 10 days (this is their price adjustment period) and an item is in limited supply (sale or clearance), buy it and go back for the adjustment. Sometimes items when they hit the 1 Day Sale price point go really fast so just an idea!
5) MOST stores have price adjustment policies and they are usually noted on the back of the receipt. Remember, you do have to go into the store during the posted price so keep on top of those sales!
6) This also works for many on-line e-tailers, you just have to email or call customer service and they will credit you!

Savings Tip-TV Service Providers

Hello All!

Here is a savings tip for Comcast customers! I am on one of the lower Comcast plans because I am not willing to pay a great deal for my tv service. I didn't want to upgrade to digital, but I will say that the On Demand options for free tv are great, especially for kids, so it has been worth the additional monthly fee.

My daughter has been really wanting a channel that is on an upgraded plan I am just not willing to pay for, so using my savvy negotiation skills, I figured out a way around this!

I called Comcast to see what plan this channel was on for sure, they wanted $20/month for the upgraded package. I told them I refused to pay this price since I could switch to satellite for half the price of this new package price they wanted. I then asked what "promotional pricing" they might be offering for this upgraded package. They were willing to match my current package price at the upgraded line-up for 6 months. I confirmed I didn't have an obligation to this package and can cancel at any time. I was also told to call back in 6 months and ask about any new promo pricing in an attempt to keep my current price for this package. Of course, if they won't match it, I won't keep it, but for 6 months I get a bunch of additional channels for the same price I am paying now!

Savings Tip-Educator Continuing Education

Hello All!

I know I have several teachers who read my blog, so this one is intended for them.

If you hold an Oregon Teachers License, read this post for some extreme savings!

Often you need several grad credits to renew your license (especially if you are subbing like me). However, grad credits cost a lot of money and it is hard to justify this if you aren't making a full time salary.

Lane ESD offers an option to attend seminars and earn grad credit for $55/credit! A huge savings! You need 10 hours of seat time (usually 5 seminars) to earn 1 credit and sometimes they offer a 2 credit option, this happens each term. Plan ahead and start getting your credits.

Visit the Lane ESD website or email me at summerhighfill@yahoo.com if you want more information, I will walk you through it as someone did for me!

Caution/Savings Tip-Macy's Information

Hello All-

I am seeing too many changes in coupons and how sales are applied at a variety of stores and I learned a valuable lesson this weekend at Macy's that I want to share.

I am a past Macy's employee and it is not my intention to speak ill of them, but I just want you to be a savvy shopper, so here is my savings tip/caution!

They offer some great coupons, but half the time they exclude all types of items, if you don't see the exclusion clearly listed, ask to see a manager, often they will honor the discount if it isn't spelled out on the coupon, but they also use generic language like "designer" which encompasses MANY items...these coupons are a bit difficult to use. If you are a Macy's card holder you will get more coupons with fewer exclusions and this is a nice perk!

This weekend I was looking for a new bedding set for my daughter, I found a Tommy Hilfiger set that I liked, but they didn't have it at my local store (found out from a phone call), but some one had returned the throw pillows to the store, so I could check out the print there and buy the rest of the pieces on-line through Macy's. I got to the store and purchased the pillows. I thought the price seemed higher than on-line, but I thought I was confused, so I went home to check. Sure enough, the price on-line was MUCH cheaper than in the store....aaaah!!! So, I called the store and they were happy to price match if I brought the print-out from the website into the store, but I had to do it within 1 day because the sale was ending, so I have opted to just return these to the store and I purchased the other pillows on-line. I was advised by the store I would be looking at shipping charges, which is true, but it was free shipping this weekend, so I did save money shopping on-line. Before you make a major purchase at Macy's either check the price and print out the item before you go to the store because if it is cheaper on-line they will match it or at least check a purchase when you get home and if it is cheaper go back for a price adjustment!

Also, the bedding that goes with the TH set I was looking at I found at Overstock.com for $100 less than Macy's was charging!!! This is a great reminder that it is good to do a search for a product to see who is selling it for cheaper! I got a $550 set for $89, a great savings!

Steal-Robeez 0-2Y, Nordstrom.com +Free Ship

Hello All-

I always debate sharing deals when I am partaking in them because I don't want people to think I am cheap when they receive a gift I have wrote about on my blog, but then I am budget restricted, so with that said I have to share this deal!

Nordstrom.com which normally offers $8 flat rate shipping on all orders, is offering a special promotion right now where if you buy 1 pair of shoes with an order, they ship your whole order for free! Use promo code "SHOES" in the promo field.

Right now they have Robeez for ages 0-2 years for 40% off! This is about 5-6 different styles and I doubt this will last long (missed out on the crocs deal a few weeks ago) so don't delay if interested.

Do a search for Robeez and then click on "sale first" tab to have those pop up first, they are adorable styles for boys and girls. I have stocked up for upcoming baby showers. They are a versatile gift and at around $15, are right in my gift budget, down from $28 which is typically over my budget, so this is a great option! Pair it with promo code above and you get free shipping too, even if you buy more things too!

Deal-Gymbucks at Gymboree Outlet

Hello All!

Good News! You can now earn Gymbucks at Gymboree Outlet stores (for my Oregon readers that would be at Woodburn Company Stores, Woodburn-Outlets).

You can earn $25 for every $50 purchased in store and the great thing is that the outlet always has GREAT prices, typically lines repeated from the year before, so if you or your child really loved something you might be able to snag it for an additional run.

The only catch is you can't spend the Gymbucks in the Outlet stores, only in regular retail stores at this point. They may change this in the future, but for right now that is the deal.

Lifestyle Tip-Create a Reading Nook

Hello All!

From time to time I like to inspire you to use your savings to do fun things around your home or in your life. Her is a recent lifestyle tip for you to enjoy!

If you have a child who is 4+, creating a reading nook is an excellent idea to help them establish this wonderful hobby!

This weekend I was inspired with some of my proceeds from my craigslist sales to finally create a reading nook for my daughter. I rearranged some of her toy storage area, creating a cozy (perfect for a young child) area where she can plop down and enjoy reading or other quite activities.

It is super easy and inexpensive to create a special space. I incorporated a bean bag (we already had) with a metal TV tray (already had) as the table that holds a table lamp (already had) and I placed a basket under the table (already had) that holds books for reading. The nook is right under a window for good natural light, but the table lamp incorporates a cozy feel to the area. I did purchase a fantastic rug at HomeGoods to pull the corner together. I was able to pull together 4 items I already had that didn't really have a home or were being stored in my garage to put together a fun new element in my home and it cost $60 (for the rug) which I had from selling old clothes on craigslist!

I hope I have inspired you to look at what you have in your home to change things or make it feel like you have added some new-ness to your home even if you don't spend any money!

Lifestyle Tip-Declutter and Make $

Hello All-

As you work to save money, you may realize (maybe you already do) that living on less and living simply tend to go hand in hand. When you work hard to save money, you really watch what you spend your money on.

As you go through various phases in your life you may need to clear out the clutter of a previous chapter. If you have a growing child, clothes get too small, toys become less played with, a hobby starts or ends. All these things can leave residual clutter around your house that keep your atmosphere or home from being the kind of place you wish to reside.

Consider donating your items to local charities, many take items of all kinds or to a friend who has kids smaller than yours. Also, consider selling your unused, but still worthy items on Craigslist or eBay. I have enjoyed working on this project this week and have made several hundred dollars removing items from my home that are clutter at this point, but very usable to other people. Right now many people are on the green theme of buying used and trying to save some money so they will be on eBay and Craigslist more!

Help Others, Support Mr. THS & My Contestant!

Hello All-

I know if you are reading this post, you care! Many of us do! I also know that times are tight with money right now, but I have never forgotten the need to share my blessings with others be it financial, time, etc.

I am asking for my blog readers to lend support to a great cause that touches close to my heart. I have been involved with Mr. THS and various Children's Miracle Network activities for over 15 years. My daughter was a preemie and little did I know that 15 years ago, my work to help establish Mr. THS would benefit my family so closely.

My daughter spent 3 weeks in the NICU at Sacred Heart and even after 5 years, those memories bring tears to my eyes as I recount what a challenging and scary time this was for my family. It was intense to be a first time parent and have to see your tiny baby living in a hospital, a place I dreaded being. The staff were incredible and I am raising a very healthy and happy 5 year old.

I hope that my tips on saving money have blessed you and I am asking that if you are able, that you will consider making a small donation to my candidate that I am supporting for Mr. THS this year, his name is Jeff Forrest. All donations are tax deductible and go to a great cause. I would consider any and all support a thank you of sorts for the money that you save using the tips I provide you for free on a daily basis.

Don't feel bad if you can't donate or you have other worthy charities that have your support right now, but if you can, every penny helps! If you are interested, I can mail you a support letter, all money is tax deductible, if you are interested in helping please email me at summerhighfill@yahoo.com and I will get the form mailed out to you!

Thank you readers for your support! The Mr. THS event is April 11, 2009 your participation in watching the show also helps CMN, so I hope to see you there!

Thanks!

Savings Tip-Saving Coupons + Manufacturers Double Coupons

Hello All-

If you clip coupons on Sunday or any other day, don't rush out to spend them right away. It is best to put them away and watch ads for sales on these products. Sometimes ads run concurrent with the current coupons, but many times you will see coupons one week and the item goes on sale the next. You can maximize your savings if you wait a couple of weeks or until coupon is still usable to save additional money. Don't let it expire!

Also, remember that Safeway and Albertson's (this is new) offer "Double Your Manufacturers Coupons" in their ads, clip these and "stack" them with your existing coupons for even more savings. This works really good on loss leader or multiple purchase pricing the giants are currently using to lure people in. If you only buy loss leaders at the giant stores and staple items at the discount grocers you will save LOTS of money!

Savings Tip-Albertson's Policy Change (Coupons)

Hello All-

I am sad to announce that Albertson's is making a huge policy change to their coupons (thanks to 2 loyal blog readers for the update!). They will no longer be accepting competitor coupons as of April 1, this is NO joke! I hate to see what other major chains follow in this trend, I will try to keep you posted.

They feel that they are offering some new savings perks to outweigh the removal of this extra coupon option such as offering (double manufacturer coupons up to $1 in their ads and new gas perks). This saves me nothing, I only buy gas at Costco and many of my manufacturers coupons even doubled do better stand alone at Winco...so for a majority of us, the time savings of shopping 1 or 2 stores vs. 4-5 to snag deals is soon to be a thing of the past...yuck!

With that said, I would definitely clip those double manufacturers coupons and shop their loss leaders products using coupons for even more maximum savings and maybe they will re-evaluate their pricing on items or their coupon policy in the future.

Happening-Bounce Gymnastics, Review

Hello All!

From time to time, I try to write some reviews of local places to take kids. This week I am writing on Bounce Gymnastics in Eugene, OR.

Bounce was previously a South Eugene gym, but they have relocated to Downtown Eugene, near REI. More parking and a larger gym makes this a much better place to hang out...or bounce in this case!

This gym offers tons of open gyms, classes and half and full day camps during school breaks/summer vacations. The prices are reasonable for offerings and I think the staff focuses on safety and fairness.

They have also started offering Circus Arts for kids 6+ and adults, hmmmm.....might be fun! Trapeze anyone??

Anyway, this is a fun place that kids can run around and burn off some energy, especially on those cabin fever days and they have open gyms almost every day so you are sure to find a session that matches your schedule!

Hint: If you have kids 6 and under, I suggest trying to hit that open gym time vs. the all ages slot your kids might feel more comfortable!

Best Bet: Purchase a Bounce Open Gym Punch Card which costs $20, but gives you 6 sessions, purchased individually this would be 5 sessions, so it saves a bit of money.

Happy Fun!

Deal-Free Bowling (Firs Bowl)-Register Guard

Hello All-

Did you know that each day the Register Guard has a Deal of the Day Coupon? Did you know on Sunday they have a Deal of the Week coupon?

If you didn't, time to start checking!

In Sunday (4/15) the Deal of the Week is a free game of bowling at Firs Bowl on River Road in Eugene. One coupon per person, but you can use multiple coupons if you have a family...so check with friends/family to score some coupons if they aren't using them!

My family went today for $1.75! We each had a free bowling coupon and Paul and I have our own shoes* (see story below), so just my daughter had to get shoes, a cheap fun family time!

*Bonus Savings Story: If your family participates in activities on a regular basis (ice skating, bowling, etc. and your feet are done growing) I suggest purchasing shoes for that activity. They will pay for themselves very quickly! I purchased some really cool vintage bowling shoes for my husband and myself for $19.99 a pair (they are brand new!) on eBay. If we go bowling 11 times (which we will do in one year), we will then start saving money on shoes! We like to ice skate too, so we visited Play it Again Sports after our bowling excursion and my husband scored a pair of Bauer Hockey Skates for $20, regularly $100 (if purchased new). Skate rental is around $4/session, so in 5 trips he will have paid for them!

Smart Economy Tip-Credit Card Rates

Hello All-

If you carry credit card balances on certain cards each month this tip is for you. If you don't great keep up the good work and if you do make an effort to pay more than the minimum balances each month and get these paid off! Carrying debt is a burden to you, your family and your life.

If you have cards that you carry balances on and you get an offer from a competing company to give you a lower APR, get on the phone with your creditor and ask them to match the rate. Many would rather lower your rate (they will still make money off your carried balance) then lose you as a customer. This will lower your overall interest charges, saving you money each month and it only took a phone call. These companies are going to be more interested in keeping you as a customer if you have been paying on-time and are what they consider worth hanging on to.

I am sure many of you know what a FICO score is and know how to obtain one, but how vigilant are you about checking it? This score determines any credit or loan percentages you will get, have a score of 740+ and you are looking at the best loan and rate packages. You need to be in this range, if you aren't, over the next few days I will be posting tips on how to improve your FICO. If you have no idea what your score is or it has been awhile since you checked, now is the time and I will help you do it for free. If you are saying, I don't need to check I am not applying for a loan, you still need to check reports 1 time per year to check for accuracy, if errors are evident it is best to deal with them quickly and efficiently! That way when you do apply for something, you don't have to worry about incorrect information being on your report.

To get your FREE credit reports from the 3 agencies, visit: www.annualcreditreport.com (please know...many other companies exist with similar names and similar gimmicks)...this is the only one that is actually FREE, of course they will try to sell you on other services, but you don't have to buy to get this. You get 1 free report, per agency, per year. This is an important tool to check once a year for accuracy and to gauge your score and if you want to improve it, you can...keep reading my blog!

Smart Economy Tip- Gift Cards

Hello All-

Yes, I have a bundle of gift cards from all of last year that I keep saving because I don't really need anything right now, but that may quickly turn to never if I don't use some of these up!

What am I talking about? If you are holding gift cards...listen up!

If a store files for bankruptcy protection, goes under, etc. your gift card may not be valid anymore! My recommendation is to get out and use any gift cards you can now or in the next few months so that you actually are able to use them. If you have cards from extremely reputable companies, you are probably okay, but holding these is not the best idea either. If you have a birthday or upcoming event you need to buy a gift for consider using that method of payment first.

I would hate for you to lose the value on your card, so use it as quickly as you can!

Savings & Lifestyle Tip- Postal Increase

Hello All-

The post office is going to be increasing postage costs again on May 11, 2009 so use up any 42 cent stamps you have to avoid having to add multiple stamps post 5/11. Also, consider purchasing "forever stamps" in the next few months at the cheaper price...these will still work "forever" even if the price you paid is less than the current going rate!

Deal/Family Activity-Bowling

Hello All-

My family is always looking for affordable family nights. We have discovered the joys of bowling!

All the bowling alleys in Eugene/Springfield are now smoke free which makes it much better for kids.

I recommend Timber Bowl (Springfield)-if you haven't been for awhile...it's worth a new visit..recently cleaned up, non-smoking and new bowling machines in March give this alley a nice face lift it so desperately needed!

They offer discount nights on Tues/Thurs. They also offer coupons in the Entertainment Book and the Springfield Extra in the Register Guard.

Also check out other bowling spots around town Emerald Lanes, Fir Bowl, Strike City for times/pricing and possibly call ahead as league is currently going and open bowling times vary.

When you bowl you pay for shoes and the games you bowl. If this is an activity you start doing on a regular basis, I recommend buying shoes (if your feet have stopped growing!). The shoes will pay for themselves within a few months if you go on a regular basis. Shoe rentals average $2/session, so I purchased a brand new pair of shoes for my husband on eBay for $19.99...an investment up front, but after 11 visits we have them paid for! eBay has some fun vintage styles, his happen to be the classic bowling alley look, but new with box...yes!

Lifestyle Tip-Kids Activity Books & Magazines

Hello All-

My daughter has discovered activity books/magazines and I want to recommend a product that I have been very pleased with.

Highlights for Children has an assortment of products perfect for Pre-K to Elem. aged kids.

We especially enjoy High 5, Puzzle Buzz and Hidden Pictures Playground. These all have puzzles, stories and activities for kids. Visit www.Highlights.com to see what options are offered and pricing. I am signed up for recurring shipments which makes it easy!

My daughter and I have a deal that everyday she can stop me at any point (I get to say no 1x in case I am in the middle of something) and say "it's time for my puzzle books" and we spend 30 minutes on a book.

She has enjoyed this 1 on 1 time with me that is special dedicated time. We set the timer, don't answer the phone, she gets my full attention. I encourage you to start this with your child!

Lifestyle Tip-Bertolli Oven Baked Meals

Hello All-

As a busy mom, employee and family manager I know you understand in your own life those busy nights when you need to put dinner on the table and want it to be easy!

I have to recommend a new Bertolli product, the "Oven Baked Meals" line....these are delicious, especially the tri-color ravioli!

The price, not great, but worth it on nights you need a meal on the table. Of course, this blog is about saving money so let me tell you about a coupon idea so you can save money on them this week if you want to stock up!

Visit www.villabertolli.com and you can print 2 $2 off coupons. Safeway this week has these on sale for $7.99 (with coupons takes you to $5.99). Clip the "double manufacturers coupons" in any Safeway ad, good up to 50 cents per item will take you down to $5.49 each. Also, if you have been saving coupons and have an order of $50, look for the $10 off a $50 Safeway coupon or the $5 off $50 in your Entertainment Book. This will allow you some additional savings and they have many $1 items in the store this week. My advice with this grocery retailer is only buy things on sale with coupons, otherwise you would be better to shop at a bargain grocer (Winco, etc.)

Travel Tip- Prepay, Lock In & Save

Hello All-

Hoping to go on a vacation or planning one right now? I am planning a trip to Canada this Fall and wanted to share a recent tip I am finding with hotels right now.

The economy has gone south and so have people's travel budgets, but you can still go on vacation and save $!

Many hotels are offering prepay and save dates. My family enjoys traveling through National Parks in Canada. One of the best properties we have stayed in up North is a Fairmont Hotel property called the Jasper Park Mountain Lodge. This property is way above our price range, but the amenities they offer are superb and so to stay there I have to get creative! First of all, I find out when the low season begins...I start our travel that day. It is a savings of over $600 a night! I know crazy, but these rooms are apparently highly sought after in the high season...I won't be traveling at that time because I can't afford that nor would I ever pay that. I was hesitant this year with plopping money down on a pricey hotel, so I got on Fairmont's website and found out they are offering a non-refundable deposit if you prepay your room. If I take advantage of this, I will save another $200/night, taking the room down to $271 a night, a great savings off the high season rate of $1200/night!

You can find these deals primarily by visiting the hotel chains you intend to stay at and looking at their specials/values pages. If you aren't seeing a prepay option, I would call the 1800# and see if they are offering such packages. The hotels like this because it is a burst of money into their coffers and you get the discount. Just make sure your plans won't be changing, because you will take the loss if you don't use the reservation and you typically can't change it....so read the fine print. It can be a steal if you use it!

STEAL-Free Pert Plus + February Freebies (Walgreens)

Hello All-

Welcome new readers! I want to remind all my new and loyal fans about the special rebate offers at Walgreen's each month. They typically offer between 3-7 FREE items each month after rebate.

What does that mean? You go to the store, purchase the items, go home enter your receipt (it takes 1 minute) and they cut you a reimbursement check and you keep the goods...it doesn't get easier than this! AND..if you put your rebate bucks on a Walgreen's gift card they give you a 10% rebate bonus back too!

Here is my February rebate story:
This month I picked up 4 of the 6 free items (the other 2 were out or haven't arrived yet). This came to around $28.44. I also on the same trip purchased my husband a 13.5 oz. bottle of Pert Plus for .49 cents! How? It is on sale for $3.49, the Easy Saver catalog has a $1.50 coupon and I had a manufacturers coupon for $1 (this is called coupon stacking, you can use a store and manufacturers coupon on the same item!). However, it's like they paid me to take these items off their hands and the shampoo too because I am going to get an additional $2.84 added to my rebate gift card! Yahoo!!! I will then use this gift card next month to purchase the freebies, you just keep adding to it each month and using for the freebies...it's easy, please try it!!

OK, I can hear some of you saying, but I won't use those products! Great, put them in your gift closet (this month the lipstick/concealer would be great for that purpose) or donate them to a local charity...times are tough right now and these places need donations. You still get the 10% bonus too!

Steal-Costco Boxed Card Sets

Hello All-

Costco offers a great boxed card set every year and it is a fabulous deal! This year there is around 40 cards (I forgot to count before I started using), but still at $14.49 this is exceptional savings over buying cards at local card shops, etc.

I like these cards because they have a custom look, but not a custom price! They come in a nice storage box that allows you to stay organized and they have cards for a variety of categories.

If you compare pricing, and if you haven't paid attention lately the cost of cards is astronomical...many starting around $3 each, that would take you to around $70 if you bought all these cards individually!

I love to have a stash of cards on hand for parties and events and just notes to friends and this is one of the easiest ways to accomplish this task for me.

I only have 1 disadvantage of this set, but the savings outweighs it! This year they have tried to improve this, but some of the card shapes (and it is noted on sleeve so you won't make a mistake) require extra postage. However, many of the cards I either hand deliver or slip into gifts so it isn't a problem typically.

Steal-Entertainment Book 2009

Hello All-

If you haven't yet picked up your 2009 copy of the Entertainment Book...here is a great offer that I hope you won't pass up!

The coupons in this book are invaluable and you will save the price within use of 1 to 2 coupons, so it is a great coupon investment!

The book retails for $25 and if you have been reading my blog you know I told you that they will offer various discounts throughout the year, but you can't save as much if you wait, so this is a great early in the year offer that I wouldn't pass up!

They are selling the book for $16.25 and it costs $1 shipping, but you must use this link: www.entertainment.com/bigvalue (then type in zip code and you are ready to order!)

Also, this is a great gift idea for friends/family! Who doesn't want to save money??

Deal-Lands End Kids Clothes

Hello All-

This post is a rave about a company that has been slowly expanding their kids line and I have to give them kudos for the work they have done to increase the trendiness, but keeping the classic looks associated with their origins.

If you haven't shopped at Lands End Kids then let me run down what you are missing...Gymboree quality/stain resistance + Mini Boden funky/trendiness + Childrens Place pricing. I think you will agree with my comparison once you check them out at:
www.landsend.com/kids.....You rarely find this type of quality/fun at such affordable prices and they have even added SPF enriched clothing this year!

The best part? They are an online e-tailer, but you can return to Sears! So, if something doesn't work out you don't have to ship it back!

Deal-Gap/Old Navy/Banana Rep. 30% Off + Free Ship!

Hello All-

Exclusively on-line this weekend Gap/ON/Banana are offering 30% off "NEW ARRIVALS". Make sure you click on this tab in the menu bar of any retailer, you can combine from all companies in 1 shopping cart, but discount will only apply to NEW ARRIVALS...this was a bit confusing, hope to save you that!

Also, if you spend $150 you can get free shipping...this is a bit steep for them, so I might suggest if you have a GAP Card or other store card from the 3 stores to try their free shipping options to see if your code will work (mine did not), but its worth a try! Or consider combining an order with a friend to save on shipping! You can return Gap Kids online purchases to the Gap retail store at Valley River Center.

Savings Tip- Magazines Gift + Sharing

Hello All-

Magazines are fun and are a great idea for an inexpensive gift for a friend!

They are also an easy alternative for giving an inexpensive gift that will last typically the whole year. Your friend will think of you each time they get their new magazine each month.

Look for promos where magazines you receive might offer a gift or incentive to you if you give the magazine as a gift. Typically it takes a bit for the 1st issue to arrive, so you can give the current copy with a "gift certificate" for the future issue or print a copy of the cover (go to mag website) and give a certificate, some magazines will send announcements of the gift too!

Also, consider sharing magazines with friends if you have similar interests. You can subscribe to one, they to another and then you can swap each month once you are done reading!

Ideas for gifts include:
Parents or Parenting-baby shower
Real Simple, Hallmark, All You, Ladies Home Journal-Friend Birthday
Outdoor Life, Shape, Fitness-Outdoor enthusiast

There are so many choices out there that you will have no problem locating the appropriate one!

Deal-Clinique GWP (Gift With Purchase) at Gottschalk's

Hello All-

Just a heads up, Gottschalk's will be doing the Clinique GWP starting Feb. 22. I always encourage people to take advantage of GWP because you usually get great products to keep or give when you buy items you use anyway.

If you combine the Macy's at Gottschalk's GWP you can end up with around 4 gifts/year.

I am not sure what the GWP will be yet this year, but that is the start date and these can sell out, so I would head in towards the beginning of the promotion.

Note: I know Macy's will presale for the GWP with their charge card. You go in prior to the sale, pick out your items and you have to wait to pick them up until the promo period has started, but it is less busy to pick out items prior to the sale and then breeze in to pick up your stuff once the sale starts. I am sure Gottschalk's does some similar option, so ask if you have their store card.

Hint: Make friends with the associates in this dept., they are often on a bit of commission and will call you or notify you if items are newly released or special promos are happening. It works...trust me, I use this technique all the time!

Marie Callender's has all types of new offers/coupons, but to get them you need to sign up for their newsletter. They send out monthly coupons you can print/clip/use. This month that included 20% off total bill and some new cheaper menu pricing options.

It pays to sign up for newsletters, it is the easiest way to score coupons for places you shop/eat!

If you don't like to give out your email, consider signing up for a free email account through Google, Yahoo, etc. and have all your coupon/sign up mail go to this account so it isn't mingling with your other account!

Savings Tip- eBay, Store Research, Comparison Shopping

Hello All-

I am currently building a house and I am moving into the phase of interior decorating. This is always a challenge as you have so many things to think about and of course I am looking for bargains. I am not on a strict time line, so I can be a bit flexible and search out my options, but even if you are on a time crunch for picking up a specific item, this is a worthy savings tip!

I am currently working on acquiring all my lighting fixtures (don't stop reading if you think this wouldn't apply to you, the savings idea can apply to all types of products!). I have decided to go with a certain finish (oil rubbed bronze). I have a limited budget and I want to stick to it, but I also want high end fixtures that will last a LONG time! This is a hard combination as I have found out! I want simple classic pieces and you would think the simpler the easier, but often the simple items are found in high end retail establishments, that would burst my budget in a few fixtures!

Alas, I started researching to see what I could get for the best price and within budget. I started off by making a list of what I needed. I then picked my style (vintage farmhouse meets old schoolhouse look). I knew I had a look to stick with, but I was flexible (depending on price) on what my actual fixtures looked like. I checked several stores that carry "period lighting" and a local hardware store to see what I had to work from. I found that some of the stores that carry "period lighting" were way over priced for the materials and others could deliver and customize at a reasonable price. I decided my best bets were to look at 2 stores (Rejuvenation-Portland) and Restoration Hardware on-line.

I had reviewed what Rejuvenation carried and their process. I knew the lighting lingo (enough to communicate) and my parameters for lighting needs. I called the store directly to see when they might offer a sale. This is a great idea as many stores offer semi or annual sales on certain product lines and if you can wait, you stand to gain a great deal of savings. I called on Jan. 9, I found out that they were having a sale on Jan 17. I visited the store on Jan 11 and was disappointed to find out that the sale was only for damaged/returned/clearance, etc rummage sale instead of a 1st quality sale. I missed that sale (Nov/Dec)....rats! I knew this store was above my budget, but I loved the look of the period pieces they offer and for the price I can't find anything else comparable. I talked to an associate who let me in on a few secrets! The items for the rummage sale were currently available prior to the rummage sale at a reduced price. They would go an additional 25% off once the sale started and they would go for a larger discount off as the sale continued to run and the inventory would increase the day of the initial sale. This was excellent news (it cost me nothing, but to ask!!). My husband and I ran up the stairs to see what they had. We were able to score 4-5 fixtures at a fraction of the original price and decided to make the trek to Portland again for the rummage sale to see if we could pick up a few more pieces at the additional discount. On Jan. 17 (opening day of sale), we drove up to Portland and I am happy to report picked up 6 additional fixtures and a doorbell chime for 60% off original retail! I was so excited adding up the savings on the way home! It took some time, but so far I am within budget and I got the fixtures that were my first pick! None of the pieces I purchased had any defects, it was a real blessing.

I was able to do this because:
-I inquired about sales/talked to the associate to get insider information (always offer to get a business card or make sure they get credit for the sale if they are on commission)
-I was willing to spend my time (driving) and time (rummaging) to save some BIG bucks!

Restoration Hardware is another company that offers some bathroom hardware/ceiling fan and other misc. items that I am interested in, but at prices I am not! I called the store to see if they were offering some special incentives (they were not) or to see if I could ship an item from the store that was offered catalog/web only for no shipping (you can't either!...many stores let you do this...so ask!) so I was hitting a brick wall! I was frustrated, the closest outlet is in Seattle (road trip?), but that seemed pointless as I don't want to drive too far and eat up my savings in gas, so I checked out eBay for the items that I wanted to see if I could find them. I really wanted this Acero Ceiling Fan, on sale at Restoration for $459, optional remote $40. I got it on eBay for $220 with remote...new in box! That is a great savings! I also picked up a doorbell (regularly $50) for $16.95! Since then, Restoration Hardware is currently offering a good incentive deal which I might take advantage of if I can't find my items on eBay.

How I did this:
-Call the store directly always and see if they are offering any specials or inquire if they will match competitor store deals. Also, some stores will ship items if purchased in the store if they aren't actually carried in the store...so ask!
-Search on eBay for the matching item. Sometimes you can get these items at far below retail value. For example, the fan I wanted was a name brand that RH sells, but so do other stores, so I was able to save a bundle and get my first pick item!

If you have some time to wait, have some time to devote to research (or ask your child to research for you...they are good at that!), can be a bit flexible-you can save a bundle of money. I have already saved over $1000 on retail price of my housing fixtures and am below budget. I worked the system to my advantage, got my 1st level picks and can be proud I didn't just pick up the phone or log on and paid full price for these items!

Steal-Bath & Body Works Clearance + Packaging Swap + Coupon Book

Hello All-

Bath & Body is always working deals so use it your advantage!

Right now, they are swapping out their packaging on their Signature Line so all the old packaging has been reduced to $5. Stock up if you have a favorite scent!

Also, the storewide clearance is happening with deals from 50-90% off! They actually have quite a few things in the 75-90% section, including some nice bags/toiletry cases, etc. that can serve various purposes. I picked up a fun small zipper bag (perfect for catching random loose items in my purse) for 80 cents! They have tons of these right by the register! They are zippered pouches in cream and gray.

If you spend $30 in store, make sure they give you the Spring Coupon Book. They forgot to give me mine, but I went back for it!

Also, before going to the store google "Bath and Body Works Printable Coupon", there is one floating around out there for a Free Signature Product with any purchase. You could go buy the pouch I talked about above for 80 cents and get a $5 Signature Collection item (coupon only works on old packaging) for FREE!!! It's truly a great deal!

Savings Tip-Mortgage Rates Drop!

Hello All-

If you haven't checked into refinancing your mortgage to a lower fixed rate and you are at 6% or more....please call your mortgage lender and check on rates!

This is a substantial savings with rates hovering in the high 4's to low 5's right now, that can add up to several hundred dollars of savings each month!

The rule of thumb on this is if you plan to stay in your house for at least 4-5 years or longer and you will save the cost of fees to refinance in 1 year, it is worth the initial cost.

I was at 6.75% and just lowered to 5.25%, a substantial monthly interest savings!

This is an easy way to save money!

Steal-Rite Aid (Kimberley Clark Product Deal) + Diaper Hint

Hello All-

(I start with a baby/diaper story, but if this isn't for you please keep reading the saving story is!)

It's spring and the baby boom is in full progress! I have gotten a few invitations to showers asking (its optional) to bring a pack of diapers for the new mom to be. This is a great idea and of course I want to help, but I also have a limited gift budget and I hated for the diapers to cut into that, so I got creative! I hope you will too, these are the kinds of ideas that allow you to spend and share!

At Rite Aid this month, one of the rebate deals is if you spend $25 on Kimberley Clark products you will get a $10 Rite Aid Gift Certificate by mail. This is a really good deal IF you combine this offer with coupons and items that are on sale in the store this week! They have an extensive product line, so you will easily find products you need/use on a regular basis (Kleenex, Kotex, Huggies, etc).

Huggies are on sale for $9.99 for the Supreme & Snug/Dry lines. These are in various quantities of 30-42 depending on size. Clip the coupons from the RG this past Sunday, they had 2 coupons for $1.50 off a pack of diapers. Rite Aid is offering a $2 rebate on 1 pack of diapers as well. So, if you bought 2 packs of diapers at $9.99 each, you will save $2 for the rebate and $3 from the coupons, bringing the diaper total to $14.98 for both packages.

To get me to $25 dollar mark, I purchased a huge package of Scott toilet paper, on a hot buy for $7.49 and 2 6 packs of Kleenex tissues (travel packs) for $1.99 each. All products I need/use and I will get the $10 Rite Aid Gift Certificate at the end of the month. I will then use this for things I need next month or use it towards some additional rebate savings next month.

Rite Aid has a really easy request on-line system for rebates and you can add to the rebates throughout the month and at the end of the month if you don't request your money, they automatically send it to you, so they couldn't have made it any easier!

I was able to get 2 packs of diapers at a great price to bless those new mom's to be and I saved some money myself...a great combination! You don't have to buy diapers to take advantage of this deal, you can buy any Kimberley Clark products. They are easy to locate around the store, the signage is good or check the rebate directory with the weekly ad when you enter the store, it lists all the options!

Deal-Southwest Airlines

Hello All-

I promised to post some travel tips when I returned from my vacation and although my suitcases have yet to be unpacked (hate this part!), I wanted to pass along some airline travel deals!

If you haven't ever flown Southwest, but you really want to go on a vacation I highly recommend this airline! It does have a few weird policies, which I will discuss, but the quirks make the cost so great so keep up the good work!

Southwest is considered a discount airline, but don't let that fool you! They actually offer way more perks than many of the airlines and this keeps me flying with them!

They only fly out of select cities (so for us Eugene/Springfield folks, that means a drive to Portland). I definitely suggest you price compare flight options before deciding if a trip to Portland is worth it, but many times especially if you have 2+ people flying it may be. Remember to calculate in parking (cheapest option is $9.50/day with coupon (must have on you) when checking out of Thrifty parking) or a stay at a local hotel that offers free parking (depending on your trip duration, if it is more than 5 days I would recommend checking into an airport hotel because your hotel bill would be less than paying for parking!

Anyway, back to SWA. They have a unique business model that keeps their prices low and service great! You can find the best airfares on-line at www.southwestairlines.com, they don't require a round trip for best fares and actually they sell 1 way fares, so this helps score even better deals. I recently did a Portland-San Diego departure and an Ontario to Portland return and it cost $300 for the ticket...that is a good deal for West Coast travel. Anything $300 or less is a good deal. Hint: West Coast travel is the most expensive in the U.S. (lucky us huh?) and we have the fewest choices, so travel along the Western corridor is so pricey if you are considering a trip to say Disneyland, price compare Disney World as flights to Florida can be much cheaper than to California....go figure???

Southwest (herein refered to as SWA) has an open seating policy. Don't let this wig you out, it is actually kind of fun! You just want to be in the A boarding section. To get into the A boarding section, get a Rapid Rewards account (this is free...it's there frequent flier program) and check-in for your flight on-line at the 24 hour prior departure option. This will almost always guarantee you the A section. If you haven't flown with them before, they have A,B,C boarding groups. A gets on first, B second, C third. The closer you are to the front of the group the more options you have. If you are flying with kids under 5 you can board as a family between A and B if you don't have an A boarding pass...this is a change to the previous policy, but it works good in case you end up in the C group, you will still get to sit together. My daughter enjoys selecting her seat!

SWA feeds you! This doesn't happen much anymore, but they offer drinks/snacks on all flights and will even give you (gasp!) refills which was nice for my starving child on our recent flight!

They have comfortable leather seats with more leg room than I have found on competitor airlines and the staff are hilarious! My daughter was in stitches as they announced "last one off is a rotten egg!". Our last crew broke into song a few times too, so that made it fun. Their employees enjoy their jobs and it shows!

They work hard to get you to where you need to be and have a good track record for on-time flights. On our last trip I experienced a few bumps, but they worked with passengers to do their best. We got stuck in Las Vegas with a potentially canceled flight on New Years...not exactly the city you want to be in that night! But, they hurried us onto the plane early to avoid a cancellation into San Diego because of fog. We did make it and early too, so I think this airline remembers that it is the people who keep them flying...that is a nice change!

Check them out, I think you will be happy and I know you will save $!
