Lifestyle Tip- Ellie Kay New Book Release!

Hello All-

Ellie Kay (one of my favorite authors) has just released a new book and my blog authorship entitled me to a free advance copy, which I am enjoying! Please click on book cover link at the bottom of my blog page to visit her website.

THANK YOU SO MUCH ELLIE KAY & STAFF FOR THIS COPY! IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I encourage you to pick up this book at your local bookseller or on-line today, it has great information in it that will help you save, share and life a more fulfilling life while using strategies to save your family money and sanity! I have almost finished reading the book and have enjoyed the new tips I have learned, extra education on topics I am new at and her ideas for the "Cha-Ching Factor" ways to save big bucks this year!

Ellie's Summary:
You really can be rich in every way, every day. So you want to own the home you love, make memories on wonderful vacations with family or friends, finance college educations, and help others too?
You can—starting here and now.
With lively humor, proven know-how, and practical principles for financial health, Living Rich for Less helps you stretch your dollars to realize the lifestyle of your dreams. Ellie Kay’s entertaining and enlightening examples show you simple steps to save, spend, and give smart, and her three main principles are undergirded by dozens of effective rules and hundreds of Cha-Ching Factor™ tips that keep or put money in your pocket.
Ellie knows what it’s like to be financially-strapped or struggling, wanting to be the Joneses but feeling as poor in spirit as in pocketbook. She went, within two and a half years, from being a new wife and mom with $40,000 in consumer debt and seven children (and college educations) to support, to being completely debt-free and within fifteen years able to pay cash for eleven different cars, give away three of those cars, buy two five-bedroom houses (moving from one to the other) and nicely furnish each, take wonderful vacations, dress her family in fine fashion; and support more than thirty non-profit organizations in more than a dozen different countries, giving away more than $100,000.
Isn’t that the kind of transformation to a rich life that you want?
Living Rich for Less helps anyone get there in our taxed-out, maxed-out times. Because financial security doesn’t mean just genuine prosperity, but being able to live luxuriously, give generously, and care for yourself as well as the others around you.
Why keep up with the Joneses when you can be them?

To Buy:
You can find it on-line at:
www.amazon.com (remember to order $25 worth of products (maybe some more Ellie books?) to get free shipping!

Steal-Sundance Catalog Outlet + Holiday (Promo Code)

Hello All-

If you are a consistent blog reader you know I have mentioned Sundance Catalog for their unique high quality goods! Check out: www.sundancecatalog.com

However, I have NEVER seen them run some of the specials they currently are running! Right now anything on sale or in the outlet section entitles you to an extra 10% off by using code "EXTRA".

They have incredible discounts on their holiday seasonal decorations and tons of items in their $30 and under bin!

My pick: Austrian Snowglobe, beautiful! For $9.99 (before discount), originally $59!! It is beautiful and I got one for my daughter, I hate to say I spent $29, so I have picked up a few extras for gifts next year. Think Tree of Joy for needy people, this is the perfect gift to tuck away or for a child gift exchange, this is a quality piece!

I recommend you pool an order with a friend if possible, as their shipping charges are a bit higher than other e-tailers, they use FedEx so it costs a bit more.

Steal-Jerry's Home Improvement Christmas Decorations!

Hello All-

I love Jerry's Home Improvement for all their awesome holiday decorations, I especially love them when they are 50% off or more. At the time of this post, they are 50% off, but will go all the way up to 80% off. This is a great deal!

Of course, selection begins to wain once they hit the 70-75% off point, so for best selection shop now.

I have to say this year they carried more higher end looking goods...they have some fabulous wooden candy canes and star decorations that look like they would be in a higher end boutique! These would be great to save for gifts for friends or to decorate your own home.

My husband told me that the Eugene Jerry's had WAY more trees/ornaments than Springfield. I haven't gotten out there yet...so if you are in this part of town check it out!

Steals-Post Christmas Decorations

Hello All-

I am always saying to save the most you have to plan ahead! This is really the case post seasonal festivities.

Most stores have already marked down Christmas merchandise 50%, but many will go higher and faster with discounts this year as so much stock remains on shelves so take advantage of this!

I know it is hard, but think ahead for seasonal items you might want/need next year as this will be the primo time to scoop them up at major savings to you! All you need is a bit of extra cash and a place to store items!

These kinds of things might include holiday decorations, wrap/bows, etc, seasonal food items, containers, etc.

Great deals will be out there this year with the economic forecast so if you aren't impacted, consider taking a quick tally of your paper inventory or what you might need for an advent calendar and buy while things are on sale!

Lifestyle-Dipped Pretzel Rods

Hello All-

Since I would call this blog a Lifestyle Blog, I am going to try to incorporate more tips for fun along with savings. Hopefully you can combine both of these for extra financial savings in your home!

The gift of time with your kids is invaluable, but this tip is a fun one even if you do it by yourself!

I have a daughter who absolutely adores Sprinkles and trust me I am always on the look out for unique ones and foods/crafts that incorporate them!

My latest find is Dipped Pretzel Rods. I will let you find a recipe or search for one on google, but here are some tips for this fun food activity.

1) These can be used for a party, fun dessert or just for fun! You can use a variety of chocolate chips, vanilla melts or other things for the color/flavor and this allows it to be versatile for any holiday/occassion. You can also name them different things such as Fairy Wands for a girl party or Reindeer Treats for Christmas, etc!

2) Do your dipping by pouring your melted product into a small narrow cup, this allows the pretzel rod to be turned easily and for good coverage.

3) Lay the rods for sprinkling on a cookie sheet or dish with shallow sides (to catch wild sprinkles!) with wax paper layed down (makes clean up much easier!)

4) Wilton (cake/candy manufacturer) has a new product that I just picked up and can't live without! It is a Chocolate Melter Deluxe ($19.96 at Walmart) and worth every penny! I always struggle with getting the perfect melt in the microwave and then rushing to get everything dipped or poured before it hardens up again. This system allows you to melt or warm, so you can take your time and enjoy the activity vs. getting tense with those who find the artistic need to sprinkle away! This made the activity fun and relaxes and gave me versatility in allowing current sprinkled product to dry and transfer to serving dish before the next round! I love this product! Also, these may go on 50% after Christmas, so check it out...this would be a great gift for a friend who likes to make food goods!

5) Dipped Pretzel Rods are a great gift! Package them in a fun box or other food container and share with a friend. They will enjoy it and you will save money!

Happy Fun & Saving!

FREE- Photo at Walgreen's + Gift Idea

Hello All-

Walgreen's has a FREE deal on an 8x10 photo. Through 12/20, enter FREEGIFT and get a free 8x10!

This is a great way to score an inexpensive gift for someone on your list. If you haven't had time to shop because of the crazy weather, this is an easy idea and has some great meaning!

Just get the free photo and then either pick up a frame from your gift closet or use the 40% off Michael's coupon for 1 item, don't have it? Visit www.spoofee.com for a printable coupon, dig through last week's Sunday classifieds, wait for this weeks Michael's ad or visit Pottery Barn stores (they have frames on sale right now!)-I suggest the Wood Gallery frames at a current sale price. These are very classic and have VERY nice mats built in!

You can put a very thoughtful and inexpensive gift together using this idea or if your budget allows, buy a bit nicer frame!

Hint: I got my free photo and frame from Pottery Barn and am going to use this frame as part of my seasonal decorations with a fun photo, my photo pic? A picture of my husband and daughter posing with our Christmas tree in the woods....it really adds a personal touch to my home decor!

I will be offering a free savings class in January at BrushFire Pottery in Eugene, OR. Thanks to my friend/owner for lending a site for this! Also, if you are interested in having me speak to a church group, civic group or other group-please email me for details on what I can offer your group. Depending on people/needs, I may be able to offer class for free or for a small donation to one of my favorite charities "Smile Train".

Steal-Sundance Catalog Sale Items (20% Off Everything!)

Hello All-

I love Sundance Catalog Co. (www.sundancecatalog.com), think cool/vintage/film festival goods at pricey prices so I don't shop often.

BUT....when they offer 20% off everything including additional discount on sale goods I have to share it!

My recommendation is to check out their very cool seasonal section with discounts of up to 60% and then the 20% on top of it! They have some great seasonal items and fun gifts for more reasonable prices and chances are their items are unique and you won't find them anywhere else!

I got some of the lovely wool hooked pillows for decorating next year and the Austrian snow globe for my daughter next year (it is so very cool!) and a few gifts for kids this Christmas (snowman making kit-$7.20 after discount, down from $28!!)

The website has been so overloaded that they haven't been able to keep up with sale demand so you may have to call in to order or check back soon as they are working on getting the site back up!

Deal- 20% Discount off Whole Purchase (Victoria's Secret)

Hello All-

Victoria's Secret is offering 20% off your whole in store purchase through Dec. 14. Email me at summerhighfill@yahoo.com for a forward of the coupon!

Many stores are trying to lure you in with offers. If you need things, this is a good deal. If you don't just pass them by, but these are the types of deals I encourage you to plan ahead for. If you might need a new bra in the next few months or you have gifts for people, weddings, etc. this might be a good time to purchase gift.

Many of these stores don't usually offer such wide spread coupons, so take advantage of them if you need them.

Deal-Dept. 56 Snow Village Collections

Hello All-

If you collect Dept. 56 Snow Villages this can be a pricey venture. I have discovered that eBay is truly a site to find all you need to add to your collection.

In Eugene, OR I believe the only current retailer is Hiron's (and if you have been in there lately, please hope it doesn't catch on fire!)...whew....lots of stuff in that place. Seriously, it is a fun store, but they have crammed that place full.

I have added several pieces this year to my daughter's heirloom collection such as a fun bowling alley (she discovered bowling this year) and a few other pieces for around $20 + minimal shipping...still far below original retail of the pieces. All the pieces I have acquired were either new or in excellent condition, so check it out if you want some good deals!

FREE/Happening- Holiday Light Show (Eugene)

Hello All-

I promised the light show owner I would spread the news off his show because he so willingly answered my request for his song list (thanks!). However, this is truly a sight to behold and I hope your family gets to enjoy this wonderful production by a truly gracious citizen!

This wonderful light show is best viewed from the comfort of your vehicle on a weekday evening at 5-6 p.m. The show does run from 5-10 all 7 days, but weekends as we get closer to the holidays will be a mad house, so use my guidelines above!

The house is on St. Kitts off of Crescent (near Costco). You can't miss it once you are in the neighborhood. Make sure and tune your radio to 89.3 (I think...check the sign in the yard!). One year we watched it forever and then figured out it was actually going to music...oops! It is best enjoyed with the music playing along!

And...if you want the song list, let me know...happy to forward!

Steal-Pottery Barn Promo Code (20% Off In Store-Thanksgiving Weekend!)

Hello All-

Pottery Barn rarely dispenses coupons over 10%, so when a larger one comes out, I consider that a steal!

I have a coupon for 20% all items in store from Nov. 28-30, good for 1 time use per customer/visit (read that again...yes, you can print this multiple times, make multiple trips to the store and use it multiple times). That is a bit sketchy in the language, but that is my interpretation.

Items must be in stock, not good on special orders. IT IS GOOD ON SALE ITEMS TOO! The only exception is not good on Design Studio purchases, I think this is when they help you design a space, but I have called in to PB to see what this means exactly....

This was an emailed coupon certificate and I can send it to you! Just email me at summerhighfill@yahoo.com and I will get it over to you. The only thing I ask is that you share my blog with 3 friends. Tell them about it, send them the link or email me for some free business cards with the address. STEAL-Gymboree Turkey Sale (West Coast-Tonight)

Hello All-

Gymboree has held in the past an incredible Thanksgiving sale! They start the sale on Thanksgiving on-line and it starts at 12:01 EST, which for those of you with fast math skills, equates to 9:01 p.m. PST, starting tonight Nov. 26. Take advantage of the time change, I use this strategy all the time!

For on-line purchases, you don't have to wait in crazy long lines and if you have been using some of my tips you won't have to! You already have scored many FREE items as well as some incredible pre-holiday sales.

Anyway, last year the site was bombarded so I would say shop early (when sale starts) if you need anything. Last year fleece separates were $8-10, plus Gymbucks, it was just an incredible deal. Consider buying for next Fall in a size up, I really wish I would have and will do that tonight! Planning ahead will save you $ as these items are in full stock now, but by the time they would hit the final clearance racks, these prices won't even get this low (for some of their loss leader styles), but you will have full range of sizing picks!

Leapfrog-30% Discount (On-Line) + Free Ship!

Hello All-

If you own Leapfrog (Leapster, Tag, etc) products you know how great they are! If you haven't yet purchased anything from this product line it comes with my recommendation! These products are educational, high quality and have great longevity and resale appeal.

Usually various offers are run through stores selling their products, but I haven't seen a coupon this good from the on-line site in quite awhile. Right now you can get 30% off your entire purchase by using code HY8NFF in the promo field. You can also get free shipping with a purchase of $50+.

I highly recommend the Leapster learning system. This has saved me many headaches for my daughter as we have to wait places quite a bit, it gives her something fun and educational to play with during waiting periods. They are even offering some gift packs with game system and games on-line at a discount too!

Hint: consider pooling friends for an order to get to $50. This not only saves you and your friends/family $, but it also reduces the amount of materials used to ship and transport your package...it's another way to incorporate a green way of living!

They however, don't offer coupons very often so when one comes along (thanks to Oprah on this one), I consider it a steal!

This coupon is good in store and on-line until Wed, Nov 19.

To find this coupon, copy this information into your browser:

Deal- $5 off $20 Purchase-Walgreens

Hello All-

This Friday and Saturday, save $5 on your $20 purchase at Walgreens! They run these coupons every once in awhile. You can print them on-line at www.walgreens.com

Also, check out the in-store circular (or review/print coupons on-line) so you can plan ahead before you get to the store. I always work to get right at $20 using all the coupons I have (remember to combine Walgreen's store and manufacturers) for optimum savings! If you get rebates on items, you may actually end up getting PAID to walk out of there!! Yes, I said PAID for the items you purchase. Splurge-Sundance Catalog Christmas Items

Hello All-

I know, I know this is supposed to be a steals & deals blog, but once in awhile with all the money you save, you can afford to splurge!

One of my favorite sites on-line is www.sundancecatalog.com as they always have fun products to look at. They also usually offer a fun mix of vintage items that send my heart soaring! Last year it was a vintage Chevy truck, this year a set of vintage Santa/Reindeer. Hmmmm.....well, maybe not at $695...that would be a lot of saving, but it is fun to look at!

But seriously....they do have items you won't find anywhere else and they have a great outlet section that has affordable prices on things you might have seen earlier and liked...it's a great place to check out right after holidays/seasons as items are discounted heavily, but they tend to go quick! So check back often!

Organize-Kids Play Areas

Hello All-

One of the ideas that I want to start incorporating into my blog are organizational tips. I think being organized helps you save money and I was reading an article the other day, where I think it was Suze Orman was quoted as saying if you are untidy and messy you are probably in debt. If you are clean/organized you have your finances under control. (if it was someone else, my apologies).

It is true that if you are organized and know where items are in your house by following the theme "everything has a place and a place for everything", my current motto your life will certainly take on a more balanced state. As my daughter nears 4, I feel like I am finally starting to get my life back in order and in balance (so please don't stress yourself out if you are in a season of life where this just isn't possible!). I had a dear friend tell me that I was in the messy season of life and she couldn't have been more right! I try to remember that when I get stressed about messes around my home.

Anyway, with approaching holiday and Christmas gifts coming right around the corner, I would like to encourage you to spend a few Saturday mornings (or better yet when your kids aren't around if that is possible) and start sorting/organizing their play areas. Keeping the idea of everything having a place. Kids will be more apt to put things away and enjoy helping with clean up if they are able participate by seeing where things are supposed to go so that they can find them the next time they want to use them. Having some type of organization system that is kid friendly, easily accessible and organized will make your life so much easier! Also, limiting the amount of items that are current rotation can be so helpful too! Consider tucking away toys if you have storage space so that you can rotate items into circulation, kids will be excited to see things they hadn't seen in awhile!

By spending a few hours now working on organizing and purging you will be refreshed when you aren't trying to add new items to the mix come the holidays. It is also a great time to donate items to friends/families who might have a need of used items this holiday season. Also, it will give you better perspective of what your child(ren) need and what would just be overkill this holiday season.

Happy Organizing!

FREE- 1800Flowers with $10 Purchase-Example!

Hello All-

I the coupon circular in the Register Guard (Nov. 9) they have a rebate offer for $15 savings pass to 1-800-Flowers.com. You need to spend $10 on select baking products and they will send you this pass.

If you look in the Walgreen's circular this week they have Jif/Smuckers products 3/$5 and Crisco Shortening 2/$5. If you were to buy 2 jars of peanut butter and one smuckers jam and 2 shortenings you would be at $10 and could claim the $15 savings pass! This is just 1 example, you could do a numerous amount of combinations depending on your needs.

Looking further in the Walgreen's ad you will see that their are coupons for several other eligible items such as Eagle Brand condensed milk, etc. This is typical that manufacturers and stores will run promotions that line up with one another. Be a savvy consumer and look through all coupons/circulars to see where you can combine items for maximum savings.

Hint: Start thinking about your holiday baking needs and take advantage of some of these coupon offers now so that you will have a stocked pantry when it is time to bake! Homemade gifts are cheaper and more meaningful than something at the mall, so consider this idea as you plan your holiday gifts.

Steal-Candy Clearance (Walgreen's)

Hello All-

To save money requires organization and planning ahead! I am starting to think about holiday baking and the best time to get steals on candy is post-holiday when the candy is wrapped in the specific holiday wrappers, it's a great time for deals!

At Walgreen's (and other retailers) candy that is "halloween themed" is 50% off right now. Most of the candy itself doesn't have holiday markings on it, just the bags are holiday themed and the store needs to clear merchandise for incoming seasonal merchandise.

My story: I am going to be making some cookies that have Hershey Kisses in them, I scored some bags for $1.25, normally $2.50 each! They are wrapped in Fall colors...big deal...I remove the wrappers anyway!

Discounts will continue to go up, I have seen Walgreen's in the 80% discount range..but selection will decline so best to stock up on what you need this week when selection will be best!

Deal-Entertainment Book 2009 (Walgreen's)

Hello All-

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money, a wise man told me that (my dad!) and I heed that knowledge when looking to save money.

In this case, a little spent can save you quite a bit! Normally I would recommend looking for free coupons, but sometimes you need to buy coupon books to take advantage of good deals.

Entertainment Books are a good up front investment in coupon savings. The books website will offer all types of deals in the next few months as the coupons start their life cycle (1 year) and as they get closer to expiration, various deals will come your way, but you aren't going to save any money if you don't have the book in your hands to maximize your savings the whole year!

Right now on entertainment.com you can get the book for $20 and free shipping (and that's a good option for those of you who want it sent directly to you!).

Walgreen's Special: Book is $25 normal retail. They have a $5 off coupon in the circular this week (in the Register Guard or your local store) and a $3 off coupon for a purchase over $10 at the Coburg Road store this week! Buy your book there and you can get it for $17!! A savings off $8 off retail. This is a good deal and you won't have to wait for your book to be delivered...you can start saving right away!

Don't forget this retailer has a web-based coupon program too where you can print more coupons and take advantage of new deals as they are added...this is a great bonus!

Free Perks-Join Opinion Website!

Hello All-

erewards.com is an online opinion/survey company that asks you to fill out surveys based on your profile and you can earn money to redeem for gift cards, magazines, food, etc.

This company is sometimes open and sometimes it is closed as they only have a certain # of members they use. I have noticed that the company was closed to new members, but then I got an email from macy's asking me to join. I had already joined, but I signed my husband up for an account so we could earn extra perks! So sometimes you might get an email from a company that participates/supports erewards even when they are closed for membership, sometimes you can join by invitation.

If you get an invitation, consider joining...it takes a bit of time to fill out surveys, but worth it with the free perks you get!

Hint: I have gotten $15 Borders Bucks, Free WonderTime Magazine, Free Shape Magazine, 6 Free Movie Rentals-Blockbuster, etc. just for answering some questions!

Steal-Walgreen's Mascara Offer

Hello All-

You all know I speak Kudos to Walgreens for their great offers, but if you haven't checked them out yet...do this week!

I got a wonderful email from a friend today who got a great deal at Walgreens and I wanted to share it with you!

She knows my strategies, she visited Walgreens and bought 2 Almay mascaras (they are buy one get one free this week!). She then will redeem her FREE after rebate online for 1 of the mascaras...do the math, that is BOTH FREE!!! The 1 free is good in the month of November with EasySaver Rebates, but the other one you can get free this week...want to sweeten the deal?? Visit the Coburg Rd. location (just opened) on corner of Willakenzie and take the $3 coupon that is good at this location only (you have to buy $10 worth of items) and buy the mascaras there and possibly clip and use other couponed items in their circular this week for some great savings. Remember, you can use Walgreen's store coupons combined with manufacturer's coupons (from Sunday circular or your coupon organizer) to really save some great money this week!

Hint: I am noticing some trends with Walgreens that I will share with you as I see them! They bring out the EasySaver rebates a few days before the new month (Dec. EasySaver will appear around Thanksgiving) and I always ran out and bought the FREE items the first day I could, but you can only redeem 1 rebate per item per household...they seem to delay a week or two and then run the rebate items with additional coupons like the mascara offer above (I missed out on that because I already bought the mascara and entered my rebate). It might be worth waiting throughout the month to see if they run the FREE items as part of an additional promo saving you even more money!

Deal-Disney Tinkerbell Movie - $4 Boboli Rebate

Hello All-

I am learning lots about rebates and I want to share my new knowledge with you!

I bought the latest Disney release Tinkerbell yesterday. I knew that when I bought a Disney video to enter my movie code on Disneyrewards.com (it's free to join and you get free Disney stuff, enter points for DVDS purchased or send in your movie ticket stubs!). I also knew that since I had purchased Ariel and Sleeping Beauty, this purchase unlocked my free offer of a tinkerbell collectors box (got that ordered for my daughter for Christmas...free! from disney rewards) and I knew that I would get the $5 rebate for the Minute Maid juice (sent that off yesterday, see previous blog for this entry), but what I didn't know was that there was another rebate offer! I got the thought to google Tinkerbell DVD rebates and I got a hit! Boboli is offering a $4 rebate with DVD purchase, the form is on www.boboli.com...it's like getting those products for free if you buy them at Winco or use your coupons at pricier stores.

My suggestion is that Disney often pairs with other retailers for rebates, if you buy a Disney movie or another kid title that got a lot of press, it would be worth your time to google video name and rebates and see what you get for hits! It might be worth it to score some free food!

I am noticing that more rebates are allowing you to send in copies of your receipt and all Disney DVDs have at least 2 proof of purchase tabs allowing you to take advantage of multiple rebate offers!

If you have fond memories of your college days or just want to support your favorite team, they do have a very good collection of 20+ colleges that have fun yoga pants, sweat pants, baseball tees, hoodies, etc.

These would probably fit into the lounge category, but could be worn out too!

Victoria's Secret at Valley River Center-Eugene is carrying the U of O line, but for other colleges visit www.victoriassecret.com

Hint: if you want to buy something, consider doing it on-line as they always offer great coupons and if you can find codes, you can enter up to 3 at a time so you can get some great deals this way! Visit www.retailmenot.com for promo codes, they are always available.

My story: I bought the U of O bling hoodie. I used a coupon code for $10 off a $50+ purchase, used my $10 birthday Angels reward and got a free messenger bag with a $50+ purchase using the 3 promo codes it allowed me to enter. Usually I go for the free shipping offers, but they don't have any that are currently working, but with this vendor it is very important to coupon stack!! They have great offers when you combine coupons!

Deal-Fandango/Trial Pay (Free Movie Tickets!)

Hello All-

If you go to the movies or want to, but think it is too expensive (I do!), then check out this promotion!

Visit www.fandango.com and view movie times...you will see next to the movie times a tab that says "free movie ticket", click on it. It will redirect you to a site called TrialPay. If you complete one of the transactions will listed vendors, 90+, Fandango will send you a coupon/promo code for a free movie ticket!

If you are planning on buying items on-line, then see what vendors are included as this is an easy to way to earn free tickets for items you already planned to buy! (Vendors include PacSun, Limited Too, Shoebuy.com, etc.)

My Story: I needed to buy my daughter some Crocs boots so I saw that Shoebuy was one of the TrialPay vendors. They are offering a 10% discount, plus free shipping with any purchase. I bought the shoes through the Trial Pay link and already have my free movie ticket code! Once the order is processed, Fandango forwards on the promo code email. It was super easy, I scored free shipping, a 10% discount ($3.25) and got free movie ticket when I was planning to go see a movie anyway ($8) so I got a great deal on my shoes for money I was planning to spend anyway!

Steal-Hanna Andersson Dress Sale!

Hello All-

When I love a brand I try to tell everyone about it! One of my faves is Hanna Andersson. The quality is impeccable, the durability is wonderful and they have great resale potential...all the things I look for in childrens clothing.

They don't often have sales that have really good stock and I haven't seen this sale before, so take advantage of it! All the baby/toddler/girl dresses in the latest catalog are $19, 29, 39 and this is a great savings over the typical price! I will suggest the "It's a Playdress, It's a Daydress", this is one of the best dresses I have owned, it is super easy to take care of and my daughter loves hers!

Hint: go with a few friends to stock up on sale items and save on shipping!

Also, those of you who don't know, Hanna Andersson has an outlet store in Lake Oswego, OR. I try to hit it a few times a year as things are hit and miss at this store, but sometimes some excellent bargains can be had!

Hello All-

Garnet Hill is a higher end e-tailer that carries lots of fun items from their own lines as well as other lines you would recognize like Patagonia, Franco Sarto, etc.

They have home furnishings and clothing for the whole family. When they have sales, I like to check out what they have because the quality is high often times at a price that doesn't reflect the pricey-ness of the lines they carry.

Right now anything in their sale and clearance section, markdowns up to 50% off are an additional 20% off, but you must click through the sale email for this offer to show up.

If you want this email link, send me an email at summerhighfill@yahoo.com and I will send it off to you. The sale is good through Oct. 28, so don't delay!

This program features several perks including special shopping nights and exclusive discounts. Retailers I believe are moving to these types of programs to track purchases and get away from "coupon sharing" from websites, so you may have to switch to these types of programs to get the great coupons they offer.

If you are hesitant to give out your information, I encourage you to sign up for a free email account and have all your retail information go there.

Toys R Us is a reputable company and I would trust their program to bring you all the benefits and protect your privacy.

Steal-Rite Aid (Free Products!)

Hello All-

Get to Rite Aid and pick up the weekly circular! There are 10+ free products this month after rebate and many are only free for a few days this week, so take advantage of shopping during this period.

Similar to Walgreen's, they have an easy to fill out on-line rebate system with several payment options.

People...these are FREE!!! Go buy the items and put them in stockings this Christmas or consider donating these items to charitable organizations that help those in our community who need our help. Many of the items would be great to donate to SCAR/Jasper Mountain this year during their toy drives. People forget that many of the clients are teenagers who might not want toys, but who would love some foundation or mascara or body wash (all free this month). This is a perfect way to help those in our community by donating your time (to shop and fill out rebate), but not cost you anything out of your pocket.

Deal- Rebate P& G Products (Shopko)- $10 Gas Card

Hello All-

The retailers are struggling and they are going to offer all types of rebates! Take advantage of them!!

The catch is you HAVE to fill out the forms! I make a habit of filling out my forms and mailing them in within 1 day of bringing rebate oriented products home, that way I don't forget. Retailers love mail in rebates vs. instant rebates, because I can guarantee you at least 50% of the time these aren't redeemed, don't fall into this category.

If products are on a rebate that you use regularly, stock up when rebates are offered!

This week at Shopko, they are offering a $10 gas card with the purchase of $30 Proctor & Gamble products (this is a wide range, probably more than you think) of products you probably have sitting in your drawers/cupboards at home. This is a mail in rebate, so don't forget that step! The weekly circular says "see store for details", but I am sure it includes the major brands and other brands I forget are owned by them, such as IAMS cat food, Pampers/LUVS, etc.

FREE! - Soda Pop at Albertson's!

Hello All-

This week Oct. 22-28 at Albertson's if you buy 10-2 Liter Bottles of 7-Up, A&W and Sunkist you can get them for free!

Here's How:
-Buy 10 (2 Liter) products from brands listed above. They are on sale for $10/10.
-A coupon should print at register for you to mail in your receipt/rebate information and they send you a check for $10, essentially giving you your pop for free!
-YOU MUST BUY ALL 10 LITERS IN ONE TRANSACTION!

If you have a party you are planning (7-Up is great for drink mixers, etc.) then it is a great time to stock up!

Caution: I visited Albertson's Thurston this morning and the rebate didn't print out with my transaction. This happens all the time...be persistent! They are always good on making good on an offer, but it may take a few visits/phone calls, which is frustrating! I will update this blog with what I find out once they get this resolved. Sometimes taking advantage of this rebate on the first day of the sale can be troublesome, they usually get bugs worked out later in the sale.

I am planning a trip to California, so I got a few pairs of skirts/shorts for my daughter for $2.99!

Savings Tip-Retail "Free" Offers

Hello All-

There are lots of rebates out in stores that are truly great deals! However, there are others that actually will take so much time that you may just want to cruise over them.

Here is one example, you can decide if it is worth it and I will give you my verdict at the end:

This week in the Safeway circular they are offering Buy 2 American Express Gift Cards, get a $15 prepaid AMEX gift card after mail-in rebate.

I went to Safeway to check on this as AMEX gift cards have a "registration fee", which is a ridiculous way to have you pay more for their convenience of giving a gift. Most companies don't charge these fees, not sure why they do!

The fee is $3.95/gift card. Since you have to buy 2 to get the free one, you are looking at fees of $7.90. This would leave you theoretically getting $7 free from AMEX.

When I got to Safeway, I looked for the rebate mail in form. It was not with the gift cards and it wasn't at the customer service desk. Safeway is notorious for not knowing what is going on with their rebates and when they ran this promotion last year, they didn't know what to do either, so I issue a beware of offers they are running as I lost 30 minutes today in the store trying to have them locate the rebate form (they didn't and I had to come back to the store later...they had a form faxed, but the fine print clearly states you must have an original form...the faxed one wouldn't work). I was told they could probably have a form the next day for me. I had them call the Pioneer Parkway store and they have the forms so I went ahead and bought the 2 cards and will pick up the form later to send in.

Result: I have spent 40 minutes working to get the forms, I will spend another 10 filling out the paperwork and I will save $7. Was it worth it? See below for my opinion!

My verdict: This rebate was not worth it. My time alone is worth more than $7/hour when I have other things I could have been doing. If the rebate amount was more or I happened to be shopping at the store anyway and not making a special trip for this offer only, I might consider it a decent deal, but this time I wouldn't encourage it...not worth the time & effort.

Happening-New Kids Retail Option (www.77kids.com)!

Hello All-

I have a child with a very eclectic taste in clothing so I am always on the prowl for new clothing options that don't cost an arm and leg!

A new clothing e-tailer will be introduced soon from the parent company American Eagle..it is called 77kids.com and from what I have seen in a few magazines, offers fun classic-ly trendy pieces at cheaper prices than some of the other choices out there, plus I think you will be able to get your AE perks using this store (AE Access card, etc.) Also, their pieces are guaranteed for 77 washes...I am sure more on this policy will be posted once they are up and running, but I like this type of guarantee in a retailer.

This e-tailer isn't open yet for business, but will be soon. I signed up for their email list, so I will update the blog once they are up and running. Not sure if they will have stores as well, it would be nice, but we will have to wait and see!

Savings Tip- Buying With Friends & Reselling

Hello All-

On a previous post I talked about how some stores do Buy 1 Get 1 Free. This is great, but if you don't need 2 items, consider finding a friend who is looking for items in the same category as you. You could both save 50% by buying together!

Also, you might consider buying an item and getting 1 free and then reselling it on Craigslist or eBay if it is in high demand. I have done this in the past and I was able to pay for the item I bought with the sale of the other item.

Hint: this typically works better when the economy is hopping, but people get crazy at Christmas time and sometimes spend well over the retail value for an item.

STEAL- Fred Meyer Toy Dept. Deals

Hello All-

Retailers are gearing up for a poor holiday shopping season. Take advantage of some great deals and save some major bucks!

Right now at Fred Meyer (they seem to be leading the trend a bit) they are offering lots of Buy 1 Get 1 Free items in the toy dept. from huge brands (Mega Bloks, My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, Play-Doh, etc.). They are also offering many items 50% off already...these tend to be the types of sales you see post-Thanksgiving and may miss out on items or have to get up at 5 a.m. (no thank you!). Many fisher price, Barbie and Easy Bake products are discounted this week. Plus, Fisher Price is running a special promo, buy $80 worth of products and get a $20 gas card, so compare the savings and you might be able to save a bundle!

I know what my daughter wants for Christmas so I went in today and bought 1 My Little Pony Toy and 1 Littlest Pet Shop Toy (they let me combine different brands on the Buy 1 Get 1 Free...so check on this as it provides extra savings) and saved $25 on this combo and she wants an Easy Bake Oven, at 50% off I jumped on that and saved $15. I saved a total of $45 just by shopping early for items I knew I was going to buy anyway...that is a great savings!

Other retailers will start up with these trends here soon, so try to find out what your child wants if you don't already know and then watch for those items to go on sale as the shopping season and deals start happening.

STEAL- Rite Aid Free Products...Over $150!!

Hello All-

Rite Aid and Walgreen's are notorius for running outstanding freebie sales, take advantage of these! You can find all the free items in your Sunday Rite Aid circular or visit the store for the weekly ad.

They both have easy to fill out/enter rebate systems on-line that make it almost too easy to save $, so do it!

This week Rite Aid has over $150 worth of free products on their single check rebate system. They even make it easier by having all the items on an endcap near the cash register so you don't have to hunt them down (thanks to Matt at the Springfield store for telling me that!).

You buy the items, go home and fill out the on-line rebate system, they send you a check and you got the items for free! These are the types of freebies that are great for stocking stuffers..they have 3 great lip products that I will add to my stocking list. They have great kids meds and adult sinus/cold/flue options, even some homeopathic things this time around so check it out. I also encourage people to buy and donate these items to shelters, they are free to you so why not share with others that can't afford these items!

Summer's Savings Tip- #6- Sign Up for Loyalty Programs!

Hello All-

One of the best ways to earn coupons/freebies/discounts is to sign up for loyalty or frequent buyer plans at stores/restaurants that you frequent. They want to reward their customers and you can save big by taking part in these plans.

Note: Some people are concerned about opening up their account to spam, if this is an issue...consider signing up for a free email account through google, yahoo, etc.

Most stores have websites, look for e-clubs, newsletters or some type of notification tab that will allow you to get first notice of sales, discounts, COUPONS and other offers. This is the main way to communicate with you and it will be worth it. This is one of the best ways to get coupons sent directly to you, but you have to sign up! You can always cancel communication if you change your mind, but it doesn't hurt to check out the plans.

Also, many stores have punch cards...use these, they reward you for your business. Some stores are more forthright in asking for your punch card, but if they don't offer...ask! These are typically available at coffee houses, fast food restaurants (sub shops) and some smaller retail shops (spend a certain amount-get a discount).

The best perk that most businesses offer birthday perks. Sign up your whole family (living in your home) as they will all benefit from the perks! They are great, I know from experience!

It takes a bit of time to sign up for these perks, but it is worth your time as you only need to sign up once and let the savings roll in!

Hint: Many of these stores will send you printable coupons, print them out right when you get them and file them in your coupon file for organization in your coupon organizer. It is too easy to delete them from your email box if you don't deal with them upon getting them. Or create an email folder in your inbox that you place all emails in for sorting/printing at a later date. Either way, organization is key to this process as many of these offers expire soon after you receive them!

Summer's Savings Tip #5-Organize For Savings!

Hello All-

Tip #5 maybe should have been Tip #1 because it is so important, but nevertheless I will include it here.

To save you have to be organized and have a system in place that will help you find the coupons when you actually need them. Ideally it should be portable and divided into sections.

I recommend the couponizer organizing system. Visit www.couponizer.com to check out this organizing tool. You can easily make your own with a recipe or small shoe box, just make sure you can pack it easily!

When you clip coupons, set aside time to do this once a week or as needed. This is my process. I clip coupons throughout the week and place in a file folder labeled "coupons". 2-3x/week I file all my incoming coupons in my couponizer. This way I have current coupons always in my file. 2-3x/month I go through my couponizer and remove coupons that have expired. If you have someone in the military, they can use expired coupons in the commissary...consider mailing them!

Having a portable, organized system will help you save money! Don't try to do this without some type of system...it will drive you crazy and impede your success!

Summer's Saving Tip #4-Never Buy On-Line without a Promo Code or Free Shipping

Hello All-

Here is information on Savings Tip #4. I prefer on-line shopping for the convenience and time saving it provides me. On-line shopping is an effective way to snag good deals and sales too!

I have several stores that I visit on a regular basis for sales/discounted items. If you have stores you like to shop, check online on a regular basis as items get discounted. Also, if you make a purchase check back because if an item is discounted typically within 7-14 days, you can request a price adjustment!

Before making an online purchase see if a promo code is available to use! Visit www.retailmenot.com, www.spoofee.com or type "name of store" promo code or coupon code in google.com and see if you get any hits. This is free money you can save, so make sure to check! Also, make sure you look in your coupon organizer for retail coupons or your Entertainment book for retail coupons.

Many stores will offer promotions of free shipping with a minimum purchase. Take advantage of this, either pool orders with friends or if it is a local store you can return items to, I have often bought what I needed to get the dollar amount and then returned to the store to save the shipping cost. Don't drive all over town and waste gas doing this, but if it is at a place you typically are near, it will save you $ without costing you gas.

Not as effective, but can work on-line, click on live help and ask the operator if they are running any promos/specials or if they will be soon. I have scored some discounts just for asking or I found out when an upcoming promo would be happening and waited to make my purchase.

If you have stores you shop at frequently, consider getting their credit card. This will give you special promotions, typically for on-line purchases and in store and can save you extra money. Gap, Kohl's, Macy's, etc. all have excellent reward programs with coupons!

Summer's Savings Tip #2- Coupon, Coupon, Coupons!

Hello All-

Here is savings tip #2!

Use coupons whenever and wherever you shop! Coupons are everywhere and you will save money by using them, they are free money back into your pocket...use them!

Even if you don't have a lot of time to devote to couponing, you can still save money. My theory is the more time you put in, the more you save, but still 1 hour a week can shave 10% off your food bill for example, a wise investment of time. If you have kids encourage them to help you clip/organize (more on this in tip #4).

Coupons abound in a variety of places, read my other blog entries for ideas and start clipping and saving!

Summer's Savings Tip #1

Hello All-

I have promised a few readers that I will list my own personal top 10 list of savings tips. Over the next few days I will post my ideas I have explored for saving money!

Tip #1- Don't Buy Items If You Won't Need Them!

A bargain isn't a true bargain if you won't actually use the item. The allure of a great deal shouldn't suck you in, it should allow you to save money if it is an item you need.

However, if you will use an item and it is on sale, consider purchasing it as many items go on sale when they are an immediate need and having a stash of items you will use that you were able to snag on a good deal is helpful to your savings plan. You will read more about this strategy theme in my other savings tip ideas!

If you shop at Starbucks don't miss out on this incredible deal! If you have gifts to give to teachers/mailperson/hairdresser...you know all those people who keep you looking/feeling good not to mention take care of your kids, etc. throughout the year this is a great opportunity to score a deal on a gift!

Starbucks has teamed up with Costco (warehouse only) to offer 5- $20 Gift Cards for $79.99...it's like getting 1 gift card free!

They come in a big envelope, they are all pre-loaded with gift card sleeves ready for gift giving or personal use by you. My husband buys his coffee beans there so I figured it was a good investment.

If you have kids it is likely you have enjoyed books by Laura Numeroff of the "If You Give A (Animal Name Here) A (Insert Item Here) books. If you haven't enjoyed these with your kids I highly recommend them! Your kids will be introduced to them at school as this is a popular book for kids to work with, but they are excellent and fun! These books have been out for a few years and many editions are now in paperback.

Costco has the latest release for $10.49 (retail $16.99) "If You Give A Cat A Cupcake". It is hardcover.

Steal- $5 Curious George Hardcover Books + Plush (Kohl's)

Hello All-

Kohl's Dept. Store has a charitable program Kohl's Cares for Kids and they always sell books and plush animals to support this charity.

You can score a great deal and help a good cause! The current collection is Curious George. They have 4-5 big hardcover books that are an incredible valuable. They also have 4-5 plush animals (Curious George, Dalmation, etc.) that are featured in the stories.

Hint: Combine a book + plush for a fabulous Christmas present for a child on your list or consider purchasing some for the upcoming Toys for Tots toy drive or my favorite the SCAR/Jasper Mountain holiday collection drive. Either way, this is an inexpensive way to participate and help several noble causes.

Deal-REI Members Annual Sale!

Hello All-

REI is offering members the annual 20% off 1 full price item coupon from Oct. 3-13. This is a great time to pick up items that aren't usually included (North Face....I am wanting the new Hooded Denali Jacket...why didn't they think of this sooner?).

Also, great deals on regular line merchandise including a good deal on Dansko Mary Janes. $89 vs. the typical $109-120. Dansko's are hard to get on sale and for some reason REI sometimes gets a good deal on these so if you are in the market, check them out.

I have found with REI that if they don't have the merchadise in store, go online and select the FREE to store delivery and you can get what you want if they don't have it in the store that you shop at.
